I have 7 shays --2 are the 38 ton -3 are the 36 ton and 2 are the 55 ton 3 truck
I have never had a problem as discribed. I aslo have run them on 4' curves

the sensor is in the top of the 3 cyliders a wire is connected on the back of the cylider assembly

go back to your third truck and trace the orange and white wire to where they come into the main board that is where you connect the blue wires

There is no speaker in the engine the blue wires are for the chuff

I have installed several You have to go intothe small bunker and connect the chuff wires to the main cicuit board They are not hooked up from the factory

smoke has a on/ off switch in front of engine-cars also have a switch- sound has switch at back of engine. Check to see if they are on

first run did not have a switch for large scale nmra direction. It was added later

Frank it should be on the black wire from the light in the tenderLook for a small lump under the shrink tubing you should be able to feel it

Bill the set up is the same same housing for motor and gears just changed the gears to brass The big change is the front truck Set up like BBT front truck better swing and flexability

I have taken mine apart it looks the same except the gears are brass the setup is the same I did add 1lb more on weights while I was inside it
Runs well. A local train display which is near Philly has been running them for the past month about 12 hours a day pulling at leats 6 cars with no signs of wear I opened one of these and I saw no wear on the gears.
