On30 / Re: SN3
November 05, 2008, 07:29:07 AM

Photos on a On30 group of a sg S scale tank that has been converted to On30 show that it is larger than the Bachmann car so a Sn3 version may not look too bad.

As well as new passenger cars, how about a duckbill roof that can be fitted to present cars. Also some billboard reefers for other than Breweries.

     Bob,

These are no good for Allens permanent connection needs.

Note: When you measure current, Do Not keep the meter over 15 seconds in the circuit.

    Jim,

There are french fries (pathetic gallic imitations) and there are CHIPS--and never the twain shall meet. And chips aint potato crisps either.

Regarding effective communication.   When somebody, often a 'newbie',asks for a source of certain items it is little use to be told --"see BVM,BWM or somesuch".

Looking at this Reply page, why is "hit alt+s" considered a shortcut to clicking on "Post" ????

The film of Buster Keaton in Canada is 'The Railrodder'.  He travels fron the Atlantic to the Pacific on a CN speeder. No dialogue--just background sounds and music.
He  eats and sleeps on the speeder, getting all necessary objects from the small toolbox on top of the engine cover.  These include a (very)full length fur coat, a shotgun and a 15x15 plate camera and tripod.
      Very chuckle worthy.

On30 / Re: On30 couplers

Swiny,

Yes the On30 is 1:48 but it is also narrow gauge and things are smaller than 1:48 standard gauge.  Some people just swop out the Bachmann couplers for Kadee no.5s.

General Discussion / Re: MRC symphony 77 sound system

When I converted one of my On30 Moguls to a 2-6-2ST, I installed  sound and fitted a 1" speaker in the top of a pancake stack.

On30 / Re: disassembly of the 2-6-0

I have fitted decoders in a couple of the Moguls and had the same trouble with both. After the front tab has been lifted a little the boiler will move back enough to disengage the back tab. the boiler should now lift straight up . I say should but thats when you have trouble.  The sides of the boiler aperture  foul the brass motor connection strips or something around them. Place the loco on the bench facing you. place a hand on each side and insert a finger nail between bottom of boiler and chassis midway along its length . Prise the sides of boiler apart and lift.  When replacing boiler, first hold it above the chassis in its correct position in relation to the chassis and looking from the side note the positon of the motor connectors. Now file or carve about 1/16" off  around that position on both sides of the boiler opening.  Try to lower boiler without squeezing it and see if it will slide on or if something is still catching.  Remove plastic from boiler until it will easily slide on.  Boiler should push down until both front and back tabs snap back into lock position.

Some time ago I saw some cut-price Bach lowside gons so bought half a dozen.
Removed side and end boards from all but one which had extra set of boards added to make a 4plank gon.
A couple have been shortened for use on my portable layout with the smaller steam and diesel locos.

Shorty flat and 3 plank gon. Loco has scratch body on Model Power 0-4-0T chassis.

Built a small coaling stage with some of the boards.

   rear view.

Got more ambitious and tried this

standard size tank on short chassis.

   Then progressed to this.

Parts displaced to right are discarded.

    reassembled. 5&1/8"L over end beams.

The rest of flats are "awaiting developements".

I believe that the British specified the 4-6-0T configuration for the trench locos supplied to the Brit Army for use in France.
The US Army used 2-6-2Ts in France and Army bases in the States. Have seen a photo of a Baldwin pulling a Passenger train in Oahu in 1929.

From memory the main difference between Alco and Baldwin locos was at front deck. The Baldwin had a plate front beam where the Alco had a rectangular box girder, and the side tanks extended forward of the smokebox.
A couple of years ago on some group, there was a post from an ex-serviceman who saw a (polished) Baldwin still in steam decades after WW1 at a US Army depot. Seems that it was the COs "Pet".

BTW, pointing out that a steam locomotive has a tender is sort of like mentioning a truck and its fuel tank.
Gene

Does that mean that I have to make a tender for my 2-6-2ST??

General Discussion / Re: Is DCC worth the price/time?
August 13, 2007, 07:06:15 PM

   Jim,Rich and Sheldon,

Would you take your discussion elsewhere and let us get back to answering  Big Sol's question --- is it worthwhile for HIM to use DCC to run trains on his 3x8 table (whether it is a "Layout" or no).Don't think that he will have room for 150 locos and 8-10 operators.

On30 / Re: Shorty Bachman Passenger Cars

It is fairly simple but there is one thing that you must remember. The width of any piece removed from the sides must that of a single or multiple windows. Otherwise you will have an incomplete clerestory window when you shorten the roof. You also have to shorten the sub-chassis and the seat unit by the same amount. Remove material around the center of the body and roof and the outer roof fixing lugs will still match the body. Have found a razor saw the best tool for the job.
