Title: Baldwin 4-6-0 n-scale with DCC-onboard responds as if on DC only controller
Post by: astrogene1000 on November 06, 2014, 12:20:29 PM
Question about the DCC in a Baldwin 4-6-0 n-scale with DCC-onboard
The train only responds as if DC were present even with a DCC controller driving the rails.

I also have a dz125 installed in a Mogul and a MRC-1617 run as a sound only generator and both function as expected with my controller, all three driven with the 4-6-0 not seeing the DCC, just moves at a constant rate forward but I have full control over the 125 and 1617.

I have read what I can find on the inductor/capacitor filters and removing the capacitors (happen to have any images of which ones they are on the main board?) but not sure that will help in this case

The 4-6-0, when run with a DC controller does respond to speed up/down and reverse direction, but that is with the DC controller.

This was purchased new but the case/box came with a catalog offer for the 2010 catalog if age matters.
Front truck is on correctly out of the box (issue with early prod run, upside down?)

Thoughts and thanks! (first post)

Gene

Thoughts....
1) if you bought it from a dealer and have the receipt the Bman warranty is second to none.
2) if not, you have a choice. Me, I'd swap out the decoder, as Bmanns service is quite good, but the bachmann fee based fix will cost as much as a decoder plus shipping. Hints on the swap start here.

3) have you tried resetting the decoder on your programming track? The cv should be either in the loco paperwork or on the bmann site. Search for decoder docs. It might save you thought 2.

If it won't run on DC or DCC, it may have been programmed with a DCC system to only run on one mode.

Unit runs fine on DC, just reacts on DCC as if steady state DC voltage

I put my oscope to the L&R pins on the decoder board, all looks correct as far as signal strength and rise/fall times.

I did order a dz126 to replace the original if I cannot figure it out.

The spec460 did not help, had already found that one.
Found a picture of the bottom of the decoder board on the Bmann parts site.

C7 and C8 are tied to the two inductors.

The controller is a custom one I built with android bluetooth 'console'
A quick video of the unit operating the dz125 in the Mogul and sound from the 1617.

The custom DCC system may be where your problem comes in. The decoder that Bachmann uses is based on an antiquated Lenz decoder chip set. I would try it on a different DCC system if you can to see if that is the problem. CV reset is CV8 = 8 BTW.

I did not have access to a different controller other than my custom one.

Issue solved with cutoff of original decoder and solder in of the dz126

Might still need to remove the caps, i temporarily jumpered around the inductors previously, will see how the momentum/back emf/speed functions with them still in circuit.

Thanks all for the info on Bachmann!
