Title: missing or broken step
Post by: Jack Mette on August 09, 2007, 03:17:21 PM
Dear Mr. Bach Man,
Greetings from Roswell, New Mexico!
I ordered an SP boxcar #88096 (SP car #38) and one of the" steps" on the side was broken or missing. I called the company and was told that they have no correct size replacement available. I did receive a larger  black (unpainted) step from Bachmann, ... but it looks out of place on such a fine car. Can you help, Please?
If such a step replacement is available, please send to:

There are no parts.
That said, if you do get some parts, consider yourself lucky.

One of the reasons that I pushed for the procedure on the sideframe screws in the GR review, and recommend making sure your journal lids are closed before running.
I will be super-gluing my lids shut to prevent loss.

Also, I glue the door guides and stops into the bodies.
If they go, and you have no spares, you're stuck.

Oops! My car has been standing on 4 sections of track and not moved since I placed it there right after it arrived. I had paid no attention to the journal covers until I received your note. I got up and went to take a look see and there are 5 (five) journal covers missing!

Will Bachmann replace the car? I bought it from Trainworld in New York and it arrived by UPS. I was very careful in handling it as it was such a nice looking car.

Does anyone make replacement journal covers (brass) and/or step(s)?

I will think twice before spending $100.35 (including shipping) for any other Bachmann product. A few bad apples cand destroy otherwise good products. I had plans for a flat car this month but will wait and see what Bachmann plans to do with the defective product that I recently bought.

I do not like to complain but I do like a nice looking (complete) boxcar.

Thanks for any help,
Jack

Jack:

Most folks have found the missing parts in the packaging or in the area where the cars were unpacked. Take a closer look.

Happy RRing,

Jerry

Dear Jack,
Start by contacting the dealer, then, if that doesn't work, call service. They'll o their best to help you.
Have fun!

Great!

Now I have to hunt up my receipt - I didn't steal it.
Hunt up an outside box!
Re-package the d... thing.
Pay postage back to Backhmann and wait until it arrives there and then back to home track.
It would be a lot more simple if they would just mail the missing parts.
Maybe my last Bachmann car of this "quality?"

Let me try this again.
They sent you what they had.
It was wrong.
They HAVE NO PARTS.
You return it, they will send you another unit and crush yours (while NOT saving any parts for the next poor customer).

Tip:

Find an Ozark soft-metal step, glue it on, paint to match.
It will be far cheaper, you will have spares in the bag for next time.

While I like the Bachmann LS line, parts has been a BIG issue.

Here it is for under $2. This is listed as 12" at 1:24. There is also an 18"  one

I dislike the soft metal ones myself.

You could get a set of brass ones from Phil's Narrowgauge. (http://"http://www.philsnarrowgauge.com")

I find that the brass ones hold up much better than the white metal.   Another alternative is get some brass strip and bend your own.

Not having replacement parts has been a Bachmann trademark since the 1970's.  Maybe earlier, but that was my first experience with it...

Joat-
I dislike soft metal, too, and wasn't sure Phil had brass ones.
However, if one is going to be regularly crashing, maybe better to bend than knock them off into the dense undergrowth?
