Title: stripped/broken gears
Post by: Howard on May 19, 2010, 11:32:43 PM
I have two Spectrum outside frame 2-8-0s and I am very careful about how they are handled and how I run them.  Engine #1 stripped the "drive" gear.  Sent it to Bachmann and it was fixed for $50.00 plus my shipping.  Now engine #2 has same problem.  Anyone have any experience fixing this problem?  I have heard it is not an easy job, but I am not afraid to tackle it if I have a little guidance.  Any advice is most appreciated.

Howard,

I have a Motor and gearbox kit for the Bachmann Connie.  Email me and I will send you an order form and a descriptive piece on it.  The first production run is sold out and I am working on the second run.

The axle gear can be repaired, using the right sized brass tubing and epoxy.

Howard,

I tried to modify the above message:

email barrysbigtrains@earthlink.net  623-936-6088

Also the kit is user installed and warranted for the rest of my life, just as everything else I have made.

Northwest shortline has a metal replacement gear for about $12.

I have six 2-8-0 and only one of the newest ones got broken gear shortly after being put in service. (knock on wood)

Stan,

Thanks for the reply and the info about a Northwest Shortline replacement.  Have you ever installed one?
