General Discussion / Re: Pink vs White Styrofoam

Hi Bob; you must use Dow Blue or pink extruded polystyrene foam. It is used for insulation and it is very dense and strong. It cuts without crumbling. It been a industry standard for 50 years. The white stuff is to crumbly. In Canada, where we need to insulate, it is available at every Hardwear and Home improvement store in the Country. Even are Beavers use it to insulate their Lodges!

Kurt; ream out the holes on the draw bar a little with a dill bit to give it a little play. Just hold the bit in your hand, don't use the drill. I have done this with my Consols and it helps. I also added weights in the tender.

Use Squadron  putty to fill the gap and sand smooth with fine grit sandpaper,1200 grit. You can thin the putty by adding testers glue to make a finer paste or use a new product called "Mr. Surficer' which you paint on to fill panel gaps. It comes in 3 thicknesses, 500, 1000 and 1200. Tank modellers use it alot.

My preference for applying cinders and coal to the tender is to use Artist Matte medium with 50% water and a few drops of alcohol to break the water adhesion. it drys clear and matte, does not yellow and stays flexable. Put the Cinders on the top tender deck.

HO / Re: Ballast

Dennis the beveled edge has a sharp edge and if you sand it round the ballast will stick to it better.  I have layed a lot of cork road bed in 30 years and know of what I speak. Use 60 grit paper and one or two passes will do it. It makes the roadbed look more natural as the profile is more rounded.

Hi Dennis; first paint full strenght glue on the road bed then sprinkle the ballast on then spray the dilluted mixture on. Before you put the ballast on round off the edge of the cork with sand paper. This will help the ballast stick to the edge. I like to use Artist Matte Medium cut 50% with water and add alcohol to break the water adhesion rather than detergent. I then drip it on with an eye dropper, rather than spray it, for better control.

You can only use the reverse module if youa re using DCC on your layout, if not then you have to do it the old fashion way. Check out the NMRA web site for details http://www.nmra.org/beginner/wiring.html.

Bachmann no longers produces a Hogworts Express set. Your other options are to look on Ebay, Internet train shops that might have some still in stock or purchase a British Hall class ten wheeler from a supplier of British trains and paint it British Crimson.
