Title: Bachman & spectrum slop back tender
Post by: RGW on May 21, 2017, 06:06:24 PM
Is there a spectrum slop back tender with electrical contacts? I have a project and this would save a lot of time.

There is one in N scale, but I don't think they ever made one in HO. I know of the following in HO:
USRA Long, Hicken, Vanderbuilt Long and Medium, and Auxiliary Water (N&W style)
as for a USRA short or slope-back, I think those were only made in N

Regardless the HO tenders have been out of production for a long time and are not easy to find anymore and if the slope-back did exist in HO I couldn't find any evidence of it so you appear to be out of luck unfortunately.

You could rob a slopeback from a yard goat engine from Bachmann or other mfg. Then order a set of pre-wired
trucks from Bachmann to make it "electrified".  Of course, some work most likely would be needed to bring up
the quality of looks.  Old  Hobbyline plastic kits could be another source. And they look great.

Thanks. I am working on a old Riv 0-4-0 and am adding tender pick up to it.thought if bachmann had a spectrum tender it would save a lot of time.

Here's how I did it, I kept the original tender, changed the axles, stole the pickups from another tender, drilled a small hole right near the bolster of each truck for the wire, soldered the wire to the pickup, fed the wire to the motor and soldered them there. also added a reverse light.

Thank you for the photo. I picked up some  caboose trucks with contacts and will use these. I also have bought used Spectrum tenders with there is a good deal on them from ebay and scavenge the trucks.

I have wired in a basic  decoder from a Bachmann 0-6-0 that I picked up cheap also. This same engine gave up it gear cover so I could add a pair of brake shoes to  the the rear drivers on the 0-4-0. It is too hard to add the rest.

I remember that Rivarrossi 0-4-0 from the mid 60s with tender,  the tender version of the "dockside " switcher.  It was a beautiful engine for its day s rivals today's Bachmann mogul in detail.  If the molds could be had it would make a great Bachmann product.

I still have that Rivarossi 0-4-0 sitting in my display case.
It's a pretty little switcher.
It belonged to me late father.
The only thing i changed a long time ago were sprung Kadee trucks on the slopeback tender.

Looks like it was running nice and smooth in the video. Congrats!

Couldn't help but notice all the other great projects going on in the background.  :)

Jonathan

I still do not have any HO track  permanently down yet. But am working on a HO kitbash.  Adding Spectrum tender trucks to a short vandy tender for a 0-6-0 and have a Pacific boiler and Bachmann tender going on a Mantua 2-6-6-2.

I am curious as to why Bachmann hasn't done dual wheel pickup trucks in HO on most of their models. I use the bachmann Auxiliary tender chassis  for brass/proto 2k shells to boost the pickup on some of my engines
