General Discussion / Re: Any Clue to what size On3 is?
October 05, 2009, 01:32:24 PM

On3 is O scale that models 3 ft gauge, and runs on HO track.

On3 models will not run on HO track, gauge is 3/4inch (slightly wider).
narrowing wheels on axles will allow operation on HO gauge track as used for
On30.

On30 / Re: Does size really matter?
September 20, 2009, 01:42:47 PM

Not sure about "True" 2.5ft gauge car length being 20ft, any information I have on
car lengths used by 2.5Ft   Common Carrier's, the  car lengths vary from 24 to 32 Ft over sill's. I agree shorter cars were used on industrial lines 17 to 20ft.
"Magor" built 30Ft logging cars for export around the world.

The NG&SLG had plans for the FCdeM Boxcars, very little difference in size to a
  3Ft gauge Colorado car.

If you can find some good deals on S-Scale cars, might well be worth a look.
Have converted a few to On2.5, with a few yet to be done. Trying to play
catch up with my rolling stock, so I can order some more freight cars from
South America for my OF 4-4-0 to haul.

My vote go's for Hidden Creek Copper CO's   (3FT)  Kilbourne & Jacobs Steel ore
cars, supplied by Seattle Car and Foundry in 1915/16. For those who like
signalling, the HCCCo had block signals a first in NA for NG Railways.

Magor was also a major builder of steel cars for export around the world,
Std and NG. Perhaps some Steel cane cars for the 2-6-6-2 to pull<G>.

Lets see I have a X Bachmann USRA 2-6-6-2 being converted into a
Kitson-Meyer 2-6-6-2T. Presently being converted to be DCC ready.
Atlas (O) wooden ore cars converted (4)
Various  S Std  scale cars converted (9or10)
HO Hart gons being worked on (6)

Taking a serious look at building a couple of Rio Turbro 2-10-2s in service in
Argentina, will be needing a longer TT for them though.

Just raised the couplers on 16 Bachmann 2 Bay Hoppers

Took a closer (larger) look at the camp cars, although the basic body
is the  same casting, Window and Door placement varies. 3 of the cars have end & side doors for access.
I have been meaning to pick up a set for a bridge construction crew.
Downside all the wear/patchs are the same on each carbody, just need a bit
of body work to remove/add detail.

On30 / Re: Bashing the 2-6-6-2

  Graeme

Guessing you are refering to the HO 2-6-6-2, I removed the body off mine
last night.

Remove Sand dome (center one)and then remove screw under it.

Pull out the Handrails on rear of cab, cab should fall off (mine did)

There is a small hook behind the smokebox, to hold front of shell,
lifting from rear should unlatch this, if not smokebox front will be needed to
be removed. (I had removed it earlier so not sure)

As I plan some major surgery on my conversion. Just in the process
of labeling wiring for cutting, so I get it back together correctly.
Definitly voids the Bachmann Warrenty!. <G>

For a different hopper's, check out what is offered in S scale. I have converted two
hoppers for use on my layout. "S-Scale Helper" or "Pacific Rail".

Thank goodness there is a NG-16 on a private railroad in Texas.  That is all the excuse I would need to obtain one for my fictional railroad.  Well, likely two.  One to leave in more or less original appearance and then one to "Americanize."

As Baldwin held the North American rights to the  Garratt designs what might it have looked like.
Hmmm Baldwin Garratts pulling logging trains

There are only two more locomotives I want to see Bachmann produce. The ever requested Heisler and a Garratt, either an NG-16 or the huge beast on the Puffing Billy.

Not sure the G 41/42 are huge beasts compared to the NG-16s

Stack height is only 2&3/4 inches higher,
Wheel base is 1ft 3inchs longer
Overall length is 2ft 3inchs longer

Hopefully the statement about 1:45 was a teaser of what lies in the future.

For a intersting book on the K1 Garratts, "The Anatomy of a Garratt" is well worth
taking a look at. Published by Peter Manning  Design & Drefting                             ISBN 978-0-9806212-0-4.
