The Vampire & Vampire II basically replace two 'suitcase' connectors. Lets say you have a red and black feeder wires. Using 'suitcase' connectors you would do the splice connection twice, using one connector for the red wire and another for the black:

The problem with suitcase connectors is with some wire, the metal piece doesn't always displace the insulation properly when squeezed down. Resulting in bad connections. But they are a lot cheaper than the Vampire.

With the Vampire:

You would insert your red and black feeders into the center connectors and tighten them down. If you put the red wire on the left side, the block to the left of the center connector lets you connect two more red wires. With the black in the right center position, the block to the right of the PC board would allow two additional black connections. You might actually get more than two outputs on each side, depending on the wire size your using, by ganging more than one wire in each output point.

Personally, I prefer soldered connections.
