On30 / Re: Backdating the 2-6-0

On the website of Xeodon there were some fine examples of a backdated 2-6-0 (as well as the BLI 2-8-0). Although they are not in business anymore, you can visit their website www.xeodonrail.com (select the "loco gallery" on the left).

I'm sure you can get similar parts from Precission Scale.

There is monthly magazin on On30. Maybe best meeting your expectations would be "Narrow Gauge & Shortline Gazette" and, if you are not intimidated by the French language, "Voie Libre". Both are great magazins coverings lots of American products and layouts in On30 and On3.

Some G-scalers with diorama-type micro layouts very effectively build 6-inch turntables from a peice of sewer pipe and a sewer cap. Just glue a piece of rail on it and laminate the deck (= the cap) with stripwood.

On30 / Re: Dream locomotives we would like to see

As I model the era 1880 - 1885, I'd also welcome models that replicate the typical (small and ornate) locomotives of that time. However, with two 4-4-0's already in its portfolio, I cannot imagine that Bachmann will produce one in the next 5 years or more.

Thus, I will wait (probably for many more years) for the MMI 4-4-0 .......

Although not for me, I also think that the WW1 Baldwin/Vulcan/Davenport 2-6-2 would strategically be a great prototype to offer.

A compelling reaso to modell the 19th century - automobiles didn't exist back then!!!!  ;D

Plus: trains were shorter and cars smaller.

Now that Fleischmann officially dropped their Oe / On30 "Magic Train" line, maybe Bachmann may buy the molds and re-issue them to start a line of European narrow gauge O scale trains.... (who knows).

Locomotives

I guess they will re-release the porter and the mogul with DCC and sound.
Looking at the other scales (G, as well as Liliput HOn3/HOe), I could imagine a Fairlie of the Ffestiniog Railway.
A Baldwin 2-6-2T (WW1) makes sense as it can be sold on multiple continents.

Cars
Flatcar with Donkey
Excursion car
Ffestiniog cars for the Fairlie

On30 / Re: Small O Scale Sawmill?

Take a look at the small saw mill from OZSTEAM:

They also sell structures for it.
Very much "backwoods"

On30 / Re: On30 Modeling Project

Hi,

why not take a "cheap" 2-8-2, 4-8-2 or 4-8-4 with larger driving wheels and use that as a basis?

In order to improve the optics (19th century looks), you could
- cut away every second spoke as well as
- attach bigger counterweights that look more "old time". Did that on a project and it looked quite good actually.

What strikes (irritates?) me is the fact that good quality photographs from hobbyshops, distributors and the likes can be found on the web, but the manufacturer itself is not able to put a photo on its website.

maybe Bachmann should follow car manufacturers, movie makers etc who generally "build up" a hype via sneak previews, detail photographs etc.

On30 / Wenz Modellbau Turnout Kits
May 16, 2008, 09:13:12 AM
Hi All

Does anyone have experiences with the turnout kits from Wenz Modellbau from Germany? They sell great-looking american style On30 turnout kits - both "normal" turnouts as well as stub switches.

For more info, see: http://wenz-modellbau.eshop.t-online.de/epages/Store.sf/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Shop00671/Categories/0n30

personally I'm convinced that the conversion will cost as much as an off-the-shelf MMI Eureka..... Take a look at the MMI or Caboose Hobies home page.

On30 / Re: Double sound?
January 11, 2008, 02:15:34 AM
well, my concept is one that deploys 2 identical dcc sound decoders:
- one in the locomotive for the directional mid and high frequency sounds, and
- one for the non-directional ones "under the table"

It is my guess that under the condition that you use two equal sound decoders set at the same address and with the same setting, the sound output should be equal. Or not?

Of course, the "under the table" sound output has to be filtererd from its hig freq sounds first....

Did anyone try this?

On30 / Double sound?
January 10, 2008, 10:15:08 AM
A question not specifically asked for On30...

Is it possible (from simple --> difficult) to have a sound decoder in the steam locomotive and a second (identical) sound decoder stationary located under the layou for the low frequencies?

Any synchronisation issues here?

Thanks for your help! Richard
