General Discussion / Re: Is the hobby dying (2024)?
February 08, 2024, 01:22:30 PM
In my case, being in a small town, do I drive 60 plus miles to the big city in hopes that a hobby shop might have what I'm looking for or do I sit at my computer and find exactly what I'm looking for on-line.

I remembered why I didn't do track power. The lights are 3 volts and the track is 15 volts. What size resistor would I need?

The second car. Gondola with Lemax shimmering Christmas trees lit up. The fiber optic strands light up randomly. I'll put some greenery on it to hide the wires.

I thought about track power but then they would be on all time unless I added switches. The switches now are in the battery holders.

They are flat round 3 volt batteries.

On30 / Lighted cars for Christmas
February 02, 2024, 01:34:02 PM
I added Christmas lights to my On30 flat car. I used brass nails for stanchions. I still have another flat and a gondola to do. I'll fill this one with small Christmas presents. I was able fit the battery box between the frame and the truss rods.

The rails in the diamond are "hot". I use my test light to check them.

I think he is asking about isolating the spurs not controlling the turnouts. Turning power on and off for the spurs.

I can't find my VOA meter. I've looked high and low. I'm guessing someone borrowed it. I was hoping they aren't so I could solder some jumpers.

Are the rails in the "diamond" in Bachmann crossings connected to the outer tracks? I'm trying to figure out how to keep my trolleys from stalling at the crossings.

It won't work with shallow flanges. I used Athearn's stock wheels on the center axles on all truck because they have deep flanges. They are pretty light.
I used all metal wheel sets with shallow flanges on the outer axles of each truck to give them some weight. I think I used Bachmann wheel sets.
That gave me the best of both worlds - weight and depth.

These are Athearn 72' Heavyweight passenger cars. You can run 72 footers. There is a lot of overhang but you can do it. The proof is in the video.
The outside is 18" radius, the inside is mostly 15" radius, and the middle is a mixture of 15" and 18". I do have ne 22" radius is there. So
