December 16, 2009, 09:06:11 PM

thx--gj

Large / Long Caboose upgrades
October 14, 2009, 01:53:02 AM
Now that I finally have my long caboose, I'm trying to fix some things--I have fairly well corrected the marker lamp lens colors, and am working on getting a crew on board.

They're still using those dark orange LED's --this time in the wall lamps.  I found the instruction sheet that mentions "exchanging the LED's"--I have pulled off the lamp chimneys, and have pulled up one of the yellow LED's--but it feels like it is connected to something.  Is it hard wired or id it just plugged in?  I don't want to force it--and I'd like to put in more realistic looking lamps.

While I'm at it--might as well paint the handrails and steps white--as are my On3 cabeese.

Thanks--gj

General Discussion / Bachmann PCC Cars
June 24, 2009, 09:10:29 PM
I just got the latest issue of Scale Rails--Bachmann ad on the back cover with the variety of paint schemes on the HO PCC cars.  The paint jobs look great--can't say as much for the cars.  Why are they so far up in the air?  They should be "hunkered down" over the trucks such that the trucks are barely visible.  This is a step backward in quality, B-man.   gj

Large / Mallet comments
February 11, 2009, 08:47:39 PM
My Oregon Lumber Co. mallet arrived today--very nicely done model.  I like that you finally got a good color for the headlight LED's.

Unpacking these larger locos is almost a 2-man job.  It would help if a sheet were packed somewhere in the upper layers of the bos diagraming where to lift, or where NOT to lift in getting the model out of the box.  I managed to destroy the front footboard.

I managed to find and change the cab steps--for those who haven't changed them yet--you have to remove the mounting plate from the steps you remove--I would think that it wouldn't have been that much to include the plate with both sets of steps.

The booklet and DVD both indicate that Baldwin did not build any 3-foot gauge mallets--what about Uintah 50 and 51?

as to pulling power--I backed ther mallet own to the end of the workbench and coupled to the K-27--which has the motor turned off--it did mansge to drag the dead Mike --with some slippage.  ;

Large / 2-6-6-2 delivery
January 15, 2009, 09:02:52 PM
I keep hearing of people who have received their 2-6-6-2s--I checked with my dealer today--he tells me that Bachmann is shut down for inventory for almost the entire month of January--right when a major model is supposedly in the delivery process.

What is the situation here?  Are the Mallets sitting in the warehouse? or are we waiting for another container-load to arrive?  Are they coming in by road name? (I have ordered Oregon Lumber Co.)  What's happening??

Thanks---GJ

Large / Log Car "Stretcher"
December 13, 2008, 09:05:24 PM
Several years ago I saw a casting that allowed one to lengthen the Bachmann "Skeleton" log car.  Does anyone know where I can find some of these--I can use up to a dozen at least.

Large / DCC suggestion
December 02, 2008, 08:07:52 PM
With Bachmann now firmly in the DCC field, perhaps they could consider developing some DCC decoders specifically targeted at Large Scale.  These would be capable of handling the current loads of the larger motors, and be set up to control two-motor locomotives as well.  They should also be capable of supporting the additional functions that are frequently used with sound.

How about it, HLR?   gj

Large / PFM/PBL Sound in K-27
September 28, 2008, 08:13:43 PM
Has anyone set up a K-27 with PFM or PBL sound?  Basically it uses a small capacitor connected across the rails intermittently with the trigger to cue the chuff, and a speaker with  blocking capacitors and an RF trap connected acrpss the rails.

I guess the big question is the chuff trigger cap.  gj

Williams by Bachmann / Missed Opportunity
September 25, 2008, 09:13:28 PM
Nice ad on the back cover of Classic Toy Trains--the FM Train Masters.  Unfortunately, you missed one of the larger fleets of TM's--Southern Pacific.  SP ran theirs weekdays on the San Francisco-San Jose Commutes--and on the weekends in freight service as long as they were back in San Jose by Monday morning.  Their performance was fantastic.  Two paint schemes were used.  Initialy the "Black Widow" then the red and gray "bloody nose".  Typical rush hour train was a pair of TM's, 8 double deck "gallery" cars, and four "Harriman" arch roof heavyweight coaches.

Hope Bachmann considers this in future runs.  gj

Large / Car identification
September 21, 2008, 09:03:57 PM
I have lost my notes on it--does anyone know the Bachmann stock number for the G Scale version of the "Scrooge Collieries" hopper car?

Does anyone have one he wants to get rid of?

Large / Bachmann DCC

Now that Bachmann is well established in DCC, how about a system including bith the base equipment and decoders rated to handle Large Scale locos.

Large / board glitches
July 27, 2008, 09:01:09 PM
I have tried to post some replies but keep getting error messages that my message has timed out.  I am typing as fast as I can--what do I have to do.  Latrest try was to respond on "K-27"  and Dimikee's question about the center hole size in the counterweights--sounds like he hasn't been pulling out that center button. There are washers in there, too.   gj

Large / Caboose
July 17, 2008, 08:55:30 PM
On the #88797  Rio Grande caboose #0503, In later years this car was distinguished by having the side windows nearest the end boarded over at the request of the conductor.  May I cuggest that these panels be supplied as separate parts  to give the buyer the option of the configuration  he wants.

I have fitted the brakeman figure's lantern with an LED and wired to track on a couple of cabooses.    gj

On30 / Product idea--Loco
June 10, 2008, 01:22:11 PM
The new RMC has a good article about converting the HO Bachmann GE 70-ton loco to HOn3.  This would be a good subject for an On30 loco--picking a suitable prototype or two.  How about it, Bachmann?  Similar to SP #1.  gj

Large / Product idea--Loco
June 10, 2008, 01:18:50 PM
The new RMC has a good article on converting the Bachmann HO GE 70-ton switcher to HOn3.  The resulting loco would be a good subject for an Fn3 loco, selecting a particular prototype or two to follow.  How about it, Bachmann?  This could be similar to the SP #1  gj

On30 / suggested model
June 04, 2008, 01:33:34 PM
Getting into the "how about making---" topic---how about making the ET&WNC "Piggyback" car--already made in G Scale--so the basic engineering is done--I picture a string of them behind a K-37 on Cumbres Pass (converted to On3)

Large / Catalog
April 25, 2008, 09:07:34 PM
B-Man--Back in March I ordered a catalog--check has cleared--nop catalog.  So today I tried the "Contact us" on this site.  I keep getting kicked back to Google for some reason.   Can you confirm the email address for me?

Thanx--I'm waiting to start drooling over the catalog-----gj

HO / EZ Command with Tsunami
April 09, 2008, 08:56:23 PM
I'm considering an EZ Command DCC for an HOn3 branch on the club layout--will the EZ Comm. operate the Tsunami equipped locos including the sound?   I don't usually work that small--   8^)   gj

Large / Glue
March 02, 2008, 08:54:21 PM
Just got my GRAMPS tank car.  One of the coupler cut lever mounts is broken loose.  I don't feel this is worth a trip to Philly--  Also there are a bunch of placard boards to mount, also needing a good glue.

What plastic cement or other adhesive works best on the new Spectrum cars?  Where do I get it?
