Title: Still working on my Lye, Stihl & Djheet layout.......
Post by: WoundedBear on December 09, 2019, 06:57:18 PM
Some progress pics. Been a long time since I have posted anything new, but that doesn't mean my hands haven't been busy.

This is Chillery's Cafe kit by Banta Modelworks.

This is an old Mountains in Minutes, foam casting that I rescued from a now closed shop. Every layout needs a cat house  ;D

This is a background kit from Model-Tech Studios...........detailing the siding took forever.

And I managed to get a Tichy Steam crane built. I'll show ya a couple pictures, but also give you the link to the album that lays the build out from start to finish. If anyone has ever been tempted to try one, but a little afraid of it, maybe this album can allay some anxiety you may encounter. It is not a simple kit, but it fits well.

Ask Jonathan......I see he has built one. I need to get my tender car finished now.

Here's the parts layout..........

Enjoy......I'll post more pics if I find them.

Looking good Sid.  I'm interested in getting some 'backdrop' flats and the Model-Tech Studios looks nice.
The Tichy Train Group cranes are really nice kits too.  I've built two already along with their boom-cars.
One set I sold with one of my old layouts and the other I still have.  You may have seen it sitting on a
siding in one of my recent pictures.  The ones I built were molded in black plastic though and the only painting
had to do was to give them a coat of dul-coat.  The only warning is to glue the boom on in a depressed position.
Otherwise, you may have difficulty getting it to pass beneath power lines.  Don't ask me how I know.

Looking forward to more pics...

Ken

Thanks Ken. On my crane, the boom is re-positionable, once I slide the cab back to access a winding drum behind the boiler.

Awesome as always, Sid!

You have a knack for breathing life into your models. Or is it the lighting?  ;D

Nice stuff as always.  I have one of those Tichy steam crane kits and am intimidated by it, will probably never build it.

Tichy kits can seem intimidating at first.  They have A LOT of parts.  However, their instructions are well thought out... try some craftsman kits that have instructions that are photo copies of photocopies... you spend most of your time guessing.

One performs a series of sub-assemblies.  The parts fit very well.  Worst part of the crane model was threading the pulley system.  I ended up using silk thread, instead of what was in the box.  Just looked a little neater to me.

Jonathan

Ship rigging cord works well for cranes and derricks. I like the cord from Model Shipways, even the smallest size has a 'lay' that looks like wire rope when used in those applications.

With Ken and Jonathan posting recent pictures, I thought it was time I got off my keester and posted some new shots also.

First up is some scenery work along a raised section of track. I liked the rock retaining wall ideas I have seen on other layouts and decided to try one. The cut rock is a piece from Chooch Industries. Once these foam castings are mounted on a semi-rigid backing they are quite easy to work with. I mounted mine to a piece of 1/16th plexi-glass. The rest is pink foam and Plaster of Paris.

The area I chose..............

The basic mock up with foam...........

Painting the rock wall.......I used Vallejo paints and a small brush.

Adding plaster castings and filling in the gaps. The pink turns white as it dries.

First layers of ground cover and color...........

Final result with buildings in place..............

What else is there? I know I have a ton of photos to get through, lol. I need to download off the phone more often.

I grabbed a Kanamodel (also out of business now) Canadian Pacific 3-car Stockyard off the shelf, some Walthers cattle and two sets of Bachmann cows and came up with this.

You can check out the whole album here.......... https://public.fotki.com/WoundedBear/scale-model-railroading/canadian-pacific-3-/ (https://public.fotki.com/WoundedBear/scale-model-railroading/canadian-pacific-3-/)

Stupendous as always, Sid!

I'm particularly jealous of your rocky outcroppings. I haven't had much luck with that technique.

I'll fly right over for some lessons after work!  :)

WOWZA ! ! !

Sid, that's a great job you did on the blending of the rock outcrops and stone retaining wall.  The backdrop
blends in perfectly too !  Everything, including all the buildings look like they fit right where there are.

I have a small stock pen too, and believe me, cows don't 'make pies' where they eat.

Keep it up we're really enjoying it.

Made some more progress in the past bit. Finally got the fascia finished. There is about a foot in the opposite corner of the room still to fill, but everything else is nice white fascia board. Here you can see the light framing under it and then the final result down one aisle.

Then it was time for for more scenery. I have been focused on filling in the back, hardest to reach corners and working my way out to the aisles. I have lift outs in place, but once sceniced, they will be a bit of a chore to pop out.

This tunnel portal at the end of the aisle is a Woodlands plaster piece with the wing walls made from Chooch foam stone sheet on 3/16ths foam board. A little foam and plaster cloth to make the basic landform.

The cat house on the hill over looks the tunnel and has had it"s basic land shape roughed in with chunks of foam.

Then the foam gets shaped with a hot wire tool.

Here's the back wall after some dirt and green stuff get sprinkled around............

I try to blend the scenery into the background as creatively as I can.

And the tunnel portal is looking better, and ready to blend into the "Possum Hollow" scene.

That's all for now. Enjoy!

Sid,
this is really looking better and better each time you update.  The way you 'blend' in with the background is
makes me wish I'd have spent more time on my background.  It really gives a sense of depth.  And now I see how
I'm going to add my fascia, which brings me to a question:  What material are you using ?  I was thinking about
that green looking ping pong table looking stuff.

Keep going, what else is there to do during 'Social Distancing' anyway ?

Ken

Ken, my fascia board is cheap 1/8th inch hardboard from home depot. I have two corners where it just flows around with no sharp edges to bump into. I like the hardboard because it follows the curves so easily.

Go ahead and ebay the stuff.

Any luck selling your kits Terry?

A few more updates from my layout. Lots of build time since we got nothing else to do.

I had this old Roundhouse Lima Business car kit. I put it together, added some KaDee trucks and couplers and some figures and thought it was cool. Then I wanted a whole sales train for Lima Locomotive.

I used an old Mantua combine and a junk flatcar to make the other two cars. Home made decals and signs. The load is leftover junk parts from Bachmann HO Shays that I have repaired over the years. I crated them, put pallets under some and lashed them all down with heavy rope.

End result is a three car train with sales offices, quarters, shop/storage and a flatcar for large parts.

Here's Honest Al trying his best to close a deal before he gets dragged out of the yard.......

And I was running low on housing in the 'hood, so I built this little Laser Art kit called The LaSalle House. I think it's a Sears Catalog house from the 1920s.

Sid, love that train of train parts !  Like a commodity train....
That's really some nice detail work.  I still have my first
Roundhouse Shay kit I built back in the early 80's.  For the first year and a half of my 'railroading' that
was my only motive power.  Then I got married and my wife bought me a Mantua Mikado for our first
Christmas together...I was on board ever since.

And, as they say, the rest is history.

Thanks for putting all the pics and keep them coming...

Thanks Jon....and Ken and the rest of you guys. Even Rich....I know you're looking Rich lolol.

Jon.....I still have one of the business cars stashed. I only found out about the Roundhouse Lima baggage car a little while ago. That's where the idea of the whole service train came from. The Mantua combine was just laying around and the flat car was a 50 footer that I hacked a section out of the center. Using up the junk. For all it will get run, I didn't even get rid of the talgo trucks on the combine lol.

Well.......another month and a half of this Chinese Virus BS has resulted in a lot of modeling bench time.

I got the crazy S'Cool Bus completed. Full build album link here if anyone is interested. https://public.fotki.com/WoundedBear/scale-automotive-mo/scool-bus/ (https://public.fotki.com/WoundedBear/scale-automotive-mo/scool-bus/)

I got number 5 of a set of caricature race cars done. I have been 18 years in putting this set together and have one more model to go.

Now....back to the trains.

More housing. Due to my auto modelling purchases, I was rewarded one free Polar Lights kit. All those caricature cars were Polar Lights brand too. I chose the "House on the Hill". The complete build album and my other Victorian homes are here....... https://public.fotki.com/WoundedBear/scale-model-railroading/ourhousekit/ (https://public.fotki.com/WoundedBear/scale-model-railroading/ourhousekit/)

This is a re-issue of the Bates Mansion from the Psycho movie, but unlicensed and without the pre-printed acetate windows and the LED kit. Nice clean castings with no flash, and an absolute joy to assemble. These old Victorian homes fit right into my time period.

Lots of wall sections. The home has a really cool floorplan with the front tower and everything.

It comes with a shallow base to set the completed house into along with a shallow staircase. I chose to mount the base on a piece of 1.5" foam and use the taller staircase to really make it a house on a HILL.

without the kit window sheet I was forced to design my own. I photo-copied the walls sections before I took them off the sprues, and with coloured pencils and Sharpie markers, made some window coverings. Cut up Bounce sheets make wonderful lace sheers to back the curtains and give a frosting effect to the glass. I don't really want people seeing a whole bare interior, but I want to light the house up. I used self stick LEDs with integral resistors.

Couldn't really bring myself to build it as the run down haunted Bates place. I cleaned her up and landscaped the yard. It sits across the tracks from the local cat house. Still needs some powders to settle the color down a tad on both these models........being beside the tracks they would have a little bit of grime on them.

Also in the neighborhood is this Design Preservation "Our House" kit that I built years ago. I like the weathering on this one and need to replicate this level on the other 2.

Anyone ever use these Background prints from Walthers? I had found a couple of packages years ago and finally found a use for them. I cut them out, mounted them on heavier card stock, and mounted it all to some half inch foam. The chimneys and other thin vertical ares get reinforced with strip wood.

Some foam glued to a strip of my fascia material.

The flats got mounted to the foam and everything trimmed back to the edges. A quick coat of burnt umber/black mix gets rid of the pink.

You'll notice a bare spot between two of the flats. I was thinking some bushes or a tall fence to go in there. I got digging through my box labelled "structure scraps". Jonathan should recognize the wall section. Its an extra from the brick engine house we both have on our layouts. I found the plastic lean-to, it will go against the other end to cover the printed barrels. Any kind of shallow relief adds to these flat buildings.

Some strip wood to define and hide the edges of the roof.

After a decal and some window black out, I ended up with a little business that fit just perfectly into the spot. This couldn't have worked out better if I planned it. Discovering these kind of "happy accidents" makes modeling enjoyable for me.

The lean-to is far left, i will put a compressed gas storage tank outside the next business and a little sidewalk in front of the sign painter's place. You can also see the pillar crane that came with the engine house in place at the right of the boiler works door. A little dirt and greens, and this can get blended in as I complete the residential hill and small industrial area.

I actually wound up with a whole new little town with a whistle stop and water tank. I am feverishly working on this area now. I am trying to build the hill sides to be removable for access. Now I need to name an unplanned town on my layout lol. ;D

Are the Cars 1/24? I love the school bus. The Stone Cook and Woods and Montgomery Willys(es) sure bring back memories of days long ago. When I was young, I always liked the Anglias, too. If I could have ever afforded to have a gasser back then, it probably would have been an Anglia.
Your buildings are looking great too.
A few kit bashes from my teenage years.

Thanks Terry. The bus is 24th scale, but the caricature cars are smaller....more in the 32nd range.

Wounded Bear, you might be interested in seeing some other aspects of your "House on the Hill," a/k/a the Bates Mansion.

In other words, it's had a life beyond the famous film in which it first appeared.

And of course, your modeling looks great!!

Sid,

Just when I thought I was the only one clever enough to keep a box of unused structure parts...

;)

That is a great project!  You have inspired me.  I was trying to contemplate what to do with my backdrop when the time comes.  Now I have an idea to steal.  Thanks for that.

I think that stone staircase is the best part of the house on the hill.  Looks like you really took your time to get that right. Great stuff.

I was never really a model car guy.  I did WWII planes--plastic and balsa.  Loved the smell of the dope and wood cement. Still not right in the head from that stuff.

Thanks for sharing... can never get enough of your pics.

Regards,

Jonathan

Sid - I've done something similar with those Walthers "Instant Buildings" backdrop prints. Like you, I cut them up and mounted the pieces on foam core board or heavy cardstock to give them some depth. In a few cases I added DPM wall pieces to increase the depth of the background buildings. If I ever manage to get my layout out of the boxes it's in, I'll post some pics.

I was talking about lift-out access sections earlier. This new town has a curve of track running underneath it. There is room to reach from under the layout, but with the two new hips, I don't go under the layout so much anymore. At least I try not to. Little access areas are easier to work with, although they take a little thought to design.

Here are two that will go under this new area that I have got roughed in as of this morning. Some hot knife shaping, add a few rock castings, more Chooch stone areas and maybe just some foam carving itself. Here are the sections removed, then set back into place.

These last two photos are a section of hillside that has been built for a few years. First picture is it in place and the second is a shot of it removed.

Oh......and speaking of lift out areas....in that last photo, the three house on the right on the hill.....that whole piece, hill, yards, road, everything, just sits there against the upper edge of the plywood. Some creative sculpting hides all the seams and edges from view.

Sid, that third picture down really gives an overall 'blend' of the backdrop.  I know you didn't use any forced perspective,
but with the thin false front buildings, and tapering distant landscape painted backdrop, it just looks like everything
belongs exactly where it is.  Nice job !

Thanks for the pics.

Well............a couple more weeks have gone by. I got some more progress made on that back corner and rockwall. Not as much as I would have liked to.....kind of got side tracked by cars again. It's a sickness :-[

So back to train pictures..........added some plaster castings and some plaster to the foam. Gave it all a wash of earth tones and black> it aint bad for a base. Needs greenery in the nooks and crannies. It lifts out just as planned. It wont be an everyday thing, but if ever have to get in there, it won't take destroying a large chunk of scenery to do it.

The rock walls are Chooch brand foam sections mounted on 3/16ths foam board.

The basic layout of the little town area is settled on and I trace aroound the bases then start laying in "fill". I like to use Scenic Express' Fusion Fiber for my ground cover base. I tint it with acrylic paints and top with Woodland's and other scenic materials including real dirt. Gator foam provides a smooth transition between bases and the Fusion Fiber smooths it all out. Way less mess than freakin' plaster. A tenth of the weight too, once it dries. and you get days of working time. Want longer? Mist with water. This stuff is great!

Also ended up with a small little industrial area out of this. I had a set of Woodland welders that I used right outta the box. I mounted them on a small scrap of plexiglass and set that into the Fusion Fiber ground base between the building and the water tank. I drilled .012" holes to stick the welding hoses into.

I bought a blue fang selfie stick a while back. 20 bucks on sale and it came with a mini tripod to hold my phone.

I can stick it into places I could never reach from the aisles. So far I am liking the results. Makes for some interesting shots that couldn't be done with out it and the remote trigger.

Okie Dokie.......here we are a week later, and the rock wall is coming along.

I left off with the wall face having a first coating of washes to bring out some color and detail.

I wasn't happy with the color and kept repainting and staining it until I got to a redder base color. Still not 100% happy, but it will work.

After a first coating of ground cover foam, it's looking much better. Then it slips back into place almost seamlessly.

My favorite material for landscaping is Fusion Fiber. This cotton based material is lighter than plaster with way less mess. It also provides you with a 3 to 4 day working time depending on your humidity. I mix a batch and spread it over my roughed in landforms. Wrap your structures in plastic film and bring the Fiber right up against the base. Or the structure can be pressed down into the Fusion Fiber to make a depression for the building to sit in.

Hills and slopes are easily accomplished, and once dry, will hold their form as well as plaster.

Leave the building in place while you apply your ground cover directly over the wet Fusion Fiber. The foam will wick up the moisture from the fiber and when dry, everything is glued in place.

Here is the depression left once the Fiber dries and the building is removed.

I used it around the store and small house as well.

More soon! ;D

I like that fusion fiber:  Does it take water color like plaster does ?  Does it come in any other
colors besides 'dark mud' ?  Does it have any other name in different countries ?  I really have
a curious mind Sid, and I want know.  Great pictures (again) by the way.  It's always more fun
to see other people's railroads.  Thanks for posting.

For fusion fiber see scenerymadeeasy.com (http://scenerymadeeasy.com)

Guys name is Dugan. He's in Kansas. The stuff is white outta the bag, and you tint it with watered down acrylic paint. It can be what ever color you wish. I have his phone number if you need.
