Large / Re: best sources of detailing parts
May 24, 2009, 01:39:15 PM
Hey thanks for the response
I am primarily looking for parts for Aristo craft and Bachmann steam locomotives to really super detail them.  That link seems to be primarily HO scale.

Large / best sources of detailing parts
May 24, 2009, 12:54:13 PM
Hey,
I have several locomotives that are in need to some major detailing. Some are aristocraft others are bachmann.  What sources are there for detailing parts ? I've found ozark miniatures, but they really do not have much for the standard side of things. Any other good sources ?

 Hey thanks!!
I primarily model the SRR, ET&WNC, and N&W. Over the last two years  I have been scratch building a 7.5 inch gauge coal fired live steam locotmotive- a Southern Ps-4 4-6-2. and WOW I've learned so much about steam locomotive design. I plan to do a N&W  A and a southern Ks-1 2-8-0 at some point. I like having the books for reference, especially the stuff you dont see in a normal train book. I have a good number of Ps-4 drawings. The appliances and such are a bit sketchy though..
  cheers

Hey I was wondering which locomotive cylcoledia  is the one to have.     There is this one:
Model Railroader Cyclopedia, Volume 1: Steam Locomotives
By Linn H. Westcott
and volume 2 which covers diesels.
Then there is the one from mainline modelers called " Locomotive Cyclopedia" vol 1 and 2.
Which are the better ones ?

Thanks

General Discussion / Re: Disappointed with Bachmann.
January 27, 2009, 10:27:39 PM
So here is what I've done with the Southern not including brass. Now some will have to be bought in unlettered versions and done up in SRR livery, I love to also really detail the heck out of them to make them more personal models and give them that southern touch.
  Bachman 2-8-0s,
Bachmann 4-6-0 a small driver in black and then i painted a large driver version in the green scheme
  Bachmann 4-4-0s
Bachmann USRA heavy 4-8-2 ( yes I know they had lights, but the heavy is whats avaliable and its not the that big of a deal)
Bachmann 2-10-2s
BLI USRA light and heavy 2-8-2s
  Walther proto 2000 USRA 0-8-0

Now for brass
- PFM 4-6-2 Ps-4
- PFM 4-6-0 F series
- PSC Ps-4 ( they did almost all versions i do believe including the streamlined)
- PSC Ms-s 2-8-2s ( all versions)
- PSC Ls-1, Ls-2 2-8-8-2s

I would really like to see a Ps-4 produced in brass or plastic again, along with the K series 2-8-0s, so hopefully one day......!

I love building and kit bashing.... currently I am scratch building a coal fired 7.5 inch gauge Ps-4 4-6-2 NO joke! Will be about 12ft long and weigh about 1200lbs when done.... Not all that far along, just finished the trailing truck and getting ready to do the cylinders.

General Discussion / N&W Hoppers and N&W Class A specs
January 27, 2009, 05:06:32 PM

So I was wondering what the most common hopper type used on the N&W was ? I was thinking maybe a H2 class 40ft 3 bay, but were the 2bay 34fts more common ?
Also does anyone know of a source of drawing for N&W locomotives, principally the A class 2-6-6-4 ?
               Thanks,

Umm... Southern Railroad Ps-4 4-6-2.... I've made the case for that one many a time! Preferably the baker valve gear, elesco FWH, long tender version.?

On30 / Re: New 4-6-0 Picture
November 02, 2008, 07:58:08 PM
WOW!!! Finally!.... How nice...I believe ET&WNC actually had 2 green paint schemes... one with SRR green, the other with a slightly darker green, not sure on the details though. I assume we'll see Bachmann release their On30 rolling stock in ET&WNC as well...   I would really like to build the #12 in 2.5inch scale 7.5 inch gauge live steam but I need to finish the 7.5 inch gauge SRR Ps-4 Im working on first....

HO / Re: southern 4-4-0

Correct I believe that the 1926 batch Ps-4s were delievered with the green scheme however they had a darker graphite smokebox. I believe that later many locomotives were repainted with a slightly lighter graphite smokebox. Then the other Ps-4s, 4-8-2s and a handful of other passenger power was also painted in this scheme. Much later in the locmotives lives the smokeboxes got painted a much darker, almost black paint which they kept until retired.
Does anyone make a accurate rendention of SRR green paint ?

Large / ET&WNC paint scheme
October 05, 2008, 12:23:06 PM
While I realize that the majority of the ET&WNCs locomotives were painted black for most of their lives. There were I believe 2 different green paint schemes used on the railroad's 4-6-0s....Was this actual southern green used with gold lettering, red/white trim? Also was the boiler russian iron or also painted ?
This leads to question does anyone make correct southern railroad green. I personally think the paint sold by weaver models is very close but maybe a tad light... ?
   Thanks

Well I agree to a point about the 2-10-2s.... however there were MANY variations....
ET&WNC never had any 4-4-0s.... except during the 1800s when a small stretch of the road was built as broad gauge and they borrowed a 4-4-0 to use as work train power then it was rebuilt later into narrow gauge....
ET&WNC 4-6-0s were all built new circi 1910-1919 or so with walcheart except the first #8 which had stephension.
The photos of the 4-4-0s Richmonds on the Bman  website all show stephension, and all the 4-6-0s show walcheart. Converting the 4-6-0 to stephension would be a extremely simple process.   Not very many 4-4-0s had walscheart...
The thing I would love to see would be Southern gear on the 2-8-0s....
One thing that is funny is that most Southern Ps-4s, and Ms-4s were built with baker then changed to walscheart later on....just shows that it all has to do with where a loco was shopped.
On the 7.5 inch gauge coal fired live steam PS-4 I am building I chose baker.... there is very little to wear out!

HO / Re: Locomotive Suggestions!

How about a Southern Ps-4 4-6-2. I am building a live steam one in 1.6 inch scale 7.5 inch gauge and need a HO one to compliment it.....

Did you make any mechanical changes to your PFM Ps-4 ? Such as can motor, re gearing, pickups on all wheels, etc.?

#30

Yes I certainly would, but I think it would be unlikely for Bachmann to produce it. However it would be a nice  BLI/PCM brass or brass hybrid..... That would certainly be a very nice model. However Bachmann would also produce a nice model. I would just be a little worried Bachmann would try to make it avaliable as a USRA heavy 4-6-2 instead of a true Ps-4, and I would really like the 14k tender/ elesco FWH/ Baker valve gear version.
