No doubt many of you, like myself, you cannot understand why so many people on this and other lists cannot spell well known product names. Look at the various thread lists currently running for examples of misspelling of product names.
Here are four of the most common misspellings, feel free to add to the list -
"Bachmann" - Not Backman nor Bachman nor Bach man.
"Kadee" - Not Kaydee.
"Athearn" - Not Athern.
"Walthers" - Not Walters nor Walther's nor Walter's.
Mr. B. How about adding these manufacturers and other to the spell check list?
May I add;
"Aristo-Craft" not Aristocraft
"Life-Like" not Lifelike or Life-like
and even though it is not a model railroad manufacturer:
"eBay" not Ebay or ebay
Jim
For what it is worth: I just wish posters would use the Spell Check that Bachmann has provided.

I taught computer science at a little college down the road for about five years after I retired. I eventually gave up on my students' grammar and spelling issues and stuck to what was in my text books. The purpose of language is to convey ideas. If you can understand, it's working, even if it's not perfect. Anything more than that is above my pay grade.
Rusty
How about mispronouncing Kato? (Kah Toe, not Kay Toe)
One that seems to happen a lot:
Amtrak- Not Amtrack or Amtrac
Isn't an Amtrac some sort of military truck?
Timothy
Behold the amtrac. All it needs now is an open platform observation on pontoons to carry the markers. ;D

Also-- "Kadee" is not "KD" nor "K.D." I believe the name is an acronym for "Keith and Dale Edwards Enterprises" --those being the names of the brothers who founded the company. gj

Actually, ebay can be spelt all three ways. As a business you can capitalize the first letter, and if go to their web page, you will find they spell both ways, eBay, and ebay. Their logo shows a small "b", but in some of their own text, you will find a capital "B".
Bruce
Timothy,
That would be "Half-track", which might also apply to some of my posts. :D
Rusty,
I think that is a picture of a "Water Buffalo". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_vehicle
Is not the correct term "Name Products"?
Famous Products has a whole new meaning.
You're probably right, Bob. All I want is the Jeep anyway. hehehehe
Rusty
Alco, Not Al co, Al-co and not Alcoa.
Rusty,
Ok, you can have the Jeep, I want the LVT for trips to Denver. That should compete in the road rage contest. >:(
I think all the names mentioned are pretty "famous" among modelers. From the "Urban Dictionary": "When you have achieved fame enough that your name can be found on Wikipedia". Heck, they named a railroad after me. :D
I might amend to: "When you're famed enough to be known to a recluse Cowboy". Familiar, famous, popular, well known, es todos mismo.

Jim
Hehe, you funny. :D
Heh. Unless I'm seeing things that aren't there, someone ought to check the spelling in the entry for the 2009 Bachmann catalog that flashes by when I log onto the Web site.
Unless they've changed the name to Bachamnn Trains and I missed the memo. ...
The US MArine Corps has a vehicle called an "Amtrac" for "Amphibious Tractor"--an armored personnel carrier.
Also--"Alco" when following usual capitolization rules relative to abbreviations, is sometimes spelled "ALCo"
gj
Or sometimes referred to as Amphibious Tracked Vehicle! Stephen
Rode in quite a few amtracs.

Do you think he has an N scale layout that he is not admitting to??
Jim
I believe he does, at his summer house in Mordor, or his mobile home in Narnia.
My question is , did anyone help them with there post . I do alot of texting back and forth with the guys and gals at work . Hampers me with my grammer and spelling . I got hammered a few times here . For spelling and so forth . They , maybe being new to the hobby may not know . Perhaps might have had coupler problems . And only heard of kadee Couplers . In there right mind they knew what they were doing and knew what they were saying . They might of needed some help .
I still don't know what many of the terms are in railroading . But hey I learned from the layout post . I actually have a point to point in my layout . Wow imagine that . How bout we keep the hobby alive and not be so critical . And correct as we would want to be corrected . That's how i learn and keeps me coming back . At least a train seed is planted in there brain . peace to all
I have a "BOBber" caboose, does that count?
We always help with posts first, but sometimes we have to read it several times to understand the question.
I realize "texting" is very popular today, but it has its place. I for one, only having about 20% vision in my remaining "good" eye, find it very difficult to read. I'm just a volunteer here like everyone else, deciphering "code" is beyond my pay scale.
I have never criticized anyone personally about their grammar or spelling. I think this thread is presented in a positive and constructive tone, as you say "helping those who are new to the hobby".
I made the same "name" spelling errors when I first joined, and I thank those who helped me with the spelling, nomenclature and jargon. If I make a mistake, I expect to be corrected.
Wow, It happens here in the model train world also, I have been into many different activities in my life, paintball, Rock Crawling, RC planes, cars helicopters, all of which brought me in contact with new people, most just enjoy the activities and enjoy sharing ideas and the fun of being in a group of people with the same enthusiasm for the hobby , but with all of them come what I like to call "spoilers" they are the ones that nitpick about the little things, they are the ones that can not just enjoy the Hobby for what it is, these people SUCK to put it bluntly. I have been into trains of all scales for years, I have built many layouts for friends and family but it was a solo hobby for me, I have no friends that enjoy trains as much as I do and so when I noticed this forum I thought it would be a great place to exchange MODEL TRAIN idea's but I see the spoilers are here and are Really really picky about things that do not really matter, Maybe there are functional illiterates that come here but are afraid to post or join in because of the spoilers and this is sad to me, as another poster mentioned, as long as you understand the post who cares if a word is misspelled. fortunately I can just stop clicking the Link to here and be done with the spoilers.
To the helpful folks thanks
To the spoilers Go eat a bag of dirt.
I'm out of here

I can't imagine why anyone would take offense to this thread. Heck, I learned a few things myself. :D
Good luck and have fun.

ah yes. guilford. home of the disposable locomotive. is that one from spring a leak terminal, botox & marine, or marine control?
Its an ex N&W GP35.
For those who don't know, Pan Am Railways/Guilford Rail System own Boston & Maine, Maine Central, and Springfield Terminal. Each own track and locomotives. Timmy Mellon started Guilford Transportation Industries, when he came in control of both B&M and MEC. Soon after, he bought ST which was then about a mile long. ST was originally an electric (street) railroad with ties to the B&M. Timmy began transferring employees from B&M/MEC payrolls to ST, because ST union contracts were more in favor of the railroad. This caused crippling strikes in the 80s which resulted in a loss of many customers. in 2006 Guilford Rail System changed their name to Pan Am Railways because of Timmy's plane fetish, and the fact that it was a more recognizable name.
Shockingly Terrible

nice smoke show :)! Poor engine, it looks like it had some coughs in it.
Got a good chuckle out of the lettering on the side of the locomotive on fire. With the one door partly open, it reads "Guilford Fail System."
Jim
Theres actually several Guilford Fail Systems locomotive kicking around. Someone has scraped off part of the R. You should see the bells on that railroad. I won't go into as much detail, but one employee has quite a bit of paint.
reminds me of the employee who, right after ns took over this part of conrail, would go around with pink paint making the NS horses anatomically correct. wish i had a photo of one of those.....
