Title: Beginer to G scale
Post by: heliboy on December 08, 2008, 10:31:44 PM
I want to start a G scale collection but I really would like some info on the hobby.

What brands to collect?

what to look for when buying?

what do the numbers infront of the locomotives mean 0-2-4-0  ect.

Are all the brands interchangeable meaning can they all run on the same system? track, power

Thanks

Q: What brands to collect?
A: What you like and can afford.

Q: what to look for when buying?
A: Items that are not over priced.

Q: what do the numbers infront of the locomotives mean 0-2-4-0  ect.
A: It is the Whyte classification system based on wheel arrangement. Click http://www.steamlocomotive.com/misc/wheels.shtml

Q: Are all the brands interchangeable meaning can they all run on the same system? track, power
A: Mostly yes if electric motor. Most commonly used track gauge is 45 mm. Rail made of different material and different height (rail code).
Power from DC or DCC source thru track or battery power on board locomotive.
Different command control systems available.
Beware different scale proportions are commonly found made to run on the same track gauge.
