I have my foam board laid out! I can finally venture into the world of model railroading! There's something I need to clear up. It's a simple question: How long do I need to wait to allow Liquid Nails for Projects to dry after I attach the board and the foam together using it. Yes, there will be heavy weight on... ;)

HO / Nails... Wonderful, Sharp, Nails...
April 12, 2009, 04:11:54 PM
Bachmann E-Z Track has nail holes, I'm planning on Liquid Nails for an adhesive for the track, but for added strength, I wanted to nail it down. Thus, removing the holes, and adding more strength. There's only one problem... What nails would work for Bachmann E-Z track? Long enough to pass through long nail holes in the ties and ballast, but also a fine depth into the hopefully 3 inches of foam, not to mention how narrow they must be.

For anyone with helpful information, there's a good "Thanks." out there. (No, no chocolates this time...)

We're leaving soon, check in when we get back, I hope.

General Discussion / Favorite MSTS or TRS video(s).
March 15, 2009, 12:44:20 AM
I know it's not like me to make Microsoft Simulators Train Simulator or Trainz Railroad Simulator topic, but I found one I really wanted to share. I've also been looking for something to view lately. I understand this is really weird to post on a model train board, but we all like trains... even simulated ones.

Throwing caution to the wind (I think),

Here's the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRqyEPw_z0A&feature=related

The only thing I ask is that it has appropriate content, language, and music.

I thought (when I first watched it) that it would be one with a bad song with foul language. It turned out fairly good, with a music-only song.

General Discussion / Something interesting...

I don't know what topic it was, but someone scratch built one of these. Then I found out a company makes them in O gauge:

I'm not sure if you may know the topic, but I thought it was interesting...

As you may know, I live in Bourbonnais, IL, Kankakee County.

Look at what happened in Grant Park, IL yesterday (January 18). Grant Park is about 10-20 miles away from Bourbonnais... Thank goodness nothing affecting us! ;)

Quote from: Daily Journel OnlineBetween 50 and 100 people are being evacuated from Grant Park following a train derailment involving hazardous materials.

Kankakee County Sheriff's Police Chief Deputy Ken McCabe said between 15 and 20 cars derailed that were carrying a liquid product — including two cars which contained small amounts of denatured alcohol. The Grant Park Fire Department evacuated several city blocks, and officials have closed several roads near the area of the derailment. The freight train derailed at 7:52 p.m. on the northbound Union Pacific line just north of downtown Grant Park.

"They are treating it as a hazmat," said McCabe, noting the alcohol product is flammable.

No injuries were reported, and the damage has been contained to railroad equipment and property, McCabe said. A local company, IVEX Corp., located at 221 E. Greenwood Ave., has also been closed and police are blocking off the area and redirecting traffic. The Kankakee County Emergency Operations Center was activated initially, but closed several hours later after officials determined the situation did not represent a widespread threat to the public.

Grant Park Fire Department officials said residents are being relocated at a warming center at Community Park. Several residents who contacted The Daily Journal said were being directed to Grant Park High School. But few if any residents could be found at those locations on Sunday evening.

HO / "The Conversion"
January 03, 2009, 09:51:44 PM
I'm slowly starting off my days as an active hobbyist. I finally have my layout board set up, and I have a fair roster of equipment at my disposal. I have yet to finish my cleaning job after I overloaded my friend GS-4 with MTH Proto-Smoke, but I'm willing to continue with my hobby. I'm currently working/brainstorming track plans and if I would rather work with half and half E-Z Track/Standard Track; All E-Z Track; or all Standard track. I'm leaning more to the option of half and half. I'm currently in a position to were I think I might consider an Illinois Central coal route instead of an ATSF/BNSF crossover coal route! I think I'll stay put with the ATSF/BNSF crossover, but plans do change. I'm currently working on obtaining further money to begin to replace my Steel Alloy E-Z Track with Nickel Silver. I've already purchased 4 9" Straight of Nickel Silver E-Z Track from our local hobby store, Hobby Lobby, for it was on sale. I've also made another great purchase in my eyes- I got some Woodland Scenics' Scenic Cement with Scenic Spray Bottle. I'm also painting a lot, I've finished painting the roof of my Atlas Station kit that wasn't up to my personal code.  ;) I'm also painting bland parts of a Life-Like kit for the "Home Coal Company" that will serve as my coal unload place. I've seen several coal loading docks that I've kept in mind, but until money provides; I'm limited to no purchases until further notice. 18" radii with 22" radii will be an option if I don't use much E-Z Track, for with my exiting siding taking up more width, I probably won't have enough room for both unless Standard Track is used. My dad and I are talking about buying me a 4'x8'x2" piece of crafting foam for my layout. (Time's toll is clearly visible on the edges) We also took a tragic loss just before we installed my layout. While on top of my dad's 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix, a piece of cardboard/drywall fell from the old roof the garage and crushed one house and all 12 of my power poles... Thank God they were all Life-Like! It's okay now, I have replacement Atlas power poles. (12 Count) I'm also painting them to look more realistic as well. I have several self-weather cars waiting while they dry upstairs. Right now, I'm currently enjoying the fact I'm no longer an "Armchair Modeler"... Instead, I've done the conversion into a world of 1:87.1th scale wonders... I love HO scale, and now, I'm going to experience it. I'm going to post up-dates here as well as information curious people may ask. Perhaps a picture or two.

Until then,

HO / E-Z Track Trouble.
December 21, 2008, 09:19:03 PM
Yesterday:
My friend, Ryan, brought over his GS4 Daylight No. 4446 to run. I hooked up my Steel Alloy E-Z Track after reassembling it on the floor after adding on 2" straights and on 90 degree crossover. The locomotive sputtered and jolted dangerously. Even stopping dead on certain spots. He ran it on his track and the locomotive preformed beautifully. After looking closely at all of my E-Z track, I noticed there were dark black blotches all over the rail tops. (Obviously electrically made). With MTH Proto-Smoke smothered on the rails (Due to a first-timer's reload of Proto-Smoke. <me>) by his GS4.

Today:
I got a smaller piece of cork and rubbed on the track's tops. Surprisingly, the Proto-Smoke seemed to act like some sort of cleanser; it removed the stains and made it look like liquid while I was removing the Proto-Smoke! I took out my U20B and ran it. Unfortunately, it encountered the same problems, and even worse, of what the GS4 took on. I looked back at the track; already blackened after only 3 times around the small loop. Cleaning the rails with cork is doing absolutely nothing, while my connections with my joints, power cables, and track-wheel are in top condition. (I assume).

I need suggestions/tips/advice on what to do. I'll try anything, but don't think too outside of the box! ;) I really just want to run trains, but if this won't stop, that will be impossible.

HO / ex-Preferred DCC Systems.
December 04, 2008, 06:32:49 PM
My friend and I are thinking about DCC systems. What are your selected favorites? My friend likes the MRC Prodigy, and I was thinking Bachmann E-Z Command, or perhaps a Digitrax set? I'd like to hear your feedback. Thanks for any future suggestions. Due to the inapporite topic addressed by this thread, I've decided to revert it into a topic refraining to DCC Programing and sharing ideas in hope of learning more about the DCC world.

HO / 'Tis Only a Matter of Time...
November 16, 2008, 08:34:11 PM
My room is almost done, and my layout is on the verge of coming into my room. It'll be a 4x8 inside my own room... I'll officially be a layout modeler besides the Steel Alloy E-Z track on the carpet. In other thread's I've posted that I've "Raided Someone's Garage", and got tons of pre-weathered and detailed, as well as undecorated, locomotives, tools, and scenery cheap. Then got what didn't sell for free. I've learned how the model, decal, paint, plan, wire, and weather 300% better than ever before, thanks to me joining Bachmann's Ask The Bachmann. Once my room is complete, and my layout is in my room. Then it will be a step bigger then my first Life-Like and Bachmann Train Set. Everything seems to be so odd. The year I get into the hobby for real, we get two Hobby Shops that sell ton of railroad stuff in a district that hasn't seen a hobby shop in 25 years, and only had a Arts & Crafts store with no train-related stock. Yesterday, I've purchased my first copy of Model Railroader, and plan to subscribe when money is gained. I'm planning an ATSF/BNSF merger time with ex-ATSFs, ex-BN and early BNSF schemed engines. On one side, a coal mine, on the other, a Life-Like Home Coal company hopper unload with distributing center, truck scale, and coals and rocks. I've also bought tons of HO scale "coal". I'm planing on a section of it being the end of a river via lake. I'll use an older Bachmann bridge to transport the trains over, and have a road under the bridge next to the river. Also, I'll see if I can fit a small mountain or something to make the mine just not be there for nothing. But I'm hoping to get a small yard. Also, this will mostly be double track, for I'm running Amtrak too. I'll see what happens. I'll get some pictures when time allows...

'Tis only a matter of time...

HO / Serious Progress On My U36B -Bachmann Industries
October 29, 2008, 10:16:18 PM
I found my paints today, and got the following at an art's and craft's store:

Testors Decal Kit- Liquid used to apply decals.

Testors Enamel Acrylic Paint- Rust

1 Tube of Non-Toxic Testors cement.

1 Pack of cement end narrows, makes a smaller trail of glue and less blobs.

Plus my already pretty fair collection of paints made it some great times with my undecorated GE U36B. I first removed the body from the base, and removed the cab. I painted all the way up to the end of the engine compartment, and down no further than the walking paths. I then re-coated some and painted harder areas. I then painted the nose and the area around the nose, such has walkways, steps, etc. a regular red. As the time past, I wanted to do more, but had to wait for drying. So I painted the black modeled tank bottom, and over the BACHMANN INDUSTRIES sign to get ride of those airbrush splats that the previous owner had made. He made it into a different road name with white and blue scheme, but removed the decals and paint, leaving some splats on the truck plastic covers and tank. The paint removed the splats, and that was that. Looking at photographs of other U-Boats (ATSF never really owned my modeling locomotive, so I just used the same scheme), I painted the the trucks silver, upon remembering that the locomotives in the ATSF bearing the Red/Silver warbonnet had silver trucks. They came out beautifully, they look more silver than my life-like EMD GP38-2 Blue/Yellow bonnet! After that, I painted one yellow strip on the main nose from the walkway to the end were the cab window split would be. I then painted the entire cab all red. After that, I studied a picture of a Blue/Yellow bonnet and copied the curves onto my model. I painted the bottom red strip, with the yellow strip on top. I've painted the rear reversing red lights red, and I'm currently getting a Sharpie  permanent marker to go sketch the black door insulation showing out that my finest brushes can't do, I'll just brush it around not making contact, and the insulation being higher, the marker will contact, making only the insulation black. I'm thinking of putting in lights, for this model runs on a truck engine, not a shaft one, I just have to connect two black wires, I'm thinking on buying some wire and bulbs and sharing the power for some head lights, cab lights, and taillights. Remember, don't expect the perfect line, I only have brushes that aren't even small, so I did what I could, and I think it look cool. I will seek out a "Santa Fe" logo kit for side lettering and nose decal. I'll report with any further information, I'll try to get a small camera for pictures, but I'll also have to get my parents to let me have a Photobucket account. 'Til next time! Bye! :)

General Discussion / Possible Site Construction Error?
October 20, 2008, 07:22:32 PM
Okay, I was clicking on my favorites tab, then the Bachmann Ask the Bachmann link, and an error message came upon my screen. :o Thinking it was the link provided by the Favorites tab, I went to google search and typed in 'Bachmann Train Online - Ask the Bachmann', came to the same site, same message. :-\ I decided to let it go and find something else until it blew over. I then called it a night, retired, and woke up. I stub my toe the other day, and I think I might of dis-located it by the bruise on the knuckle. <Nothing seriously serious.> So having a soccer unit at school, mother kept me home for the day. I tried it and the funny thing is- I worked! :o Message SIMILAR to the one posted:

There has been an error, please contact administrator if problem consists.
