On30 / ON30 K-27 & C-19

Since Bachmann has the CAD for their k-27 & C-19 for large scale, how long will it be before they scale down to ON30?

HO / Those Tiresome Tethers
December 22, 2011, 01:52:35 AM
I think we're all over those tiresome tethers between the loco & tender - a necessary evil.

I found a Bachmann loco that addresses the problem in a simple, but effective fashion.

It is a Bachmann British Outline Robinson Class 04.

The link below shows the "Clip" holding the Tether.

Merry Christmas to all.

Cheers.

On30 / Slip sliding away - ON30 oily locos.
April 15, 2010, 05:50:31 AM

G'Day,

I have received five new ON30 locos in the mail over the past month.
One was a 2-8-0 from a rival company & the others, all Bachmann, a 4-4-0, two 4-6-0's & a 2-6-6-2.

I am very happy with their running & detail , but have noticed that each time one arrives my track requires a complete clean, suffering from a good dose of OIL!

Sadly 'once bitten, twice shy', turned into 'fool me once, shame on you; fool me three or  more times, shame on me'.

Just today my HO 'SY' arrived, but this time I cleaned the wheels first, & yes they were oily. I would guess they have some new, & rather generous staff at the factory.

You may have had this problem before, but I thought I'd bring it up, just in case.
'Cause who likes cleaning oily track.....

Large / Spectrum Mogul problem.
October 17, 2009, 07:37:44 PM

G'day everyone,

I have a Yellow Pines Lumber spectrum 2-6-0. It has difficulties running through my 10' dia turnouts.

It jams & stops when the center driver reaches the frog, in any direction.
There are a couple of metal "spikes" suspended under the loco, & this seems to cause the problem. Are these spikes meant to be removed?

The loco comes with a video, but I haven't had a video player in over five years, so I don't know if it is explained there.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Large / Connie shortfalls.
September 05, 2009, 06:25:39 AM

G'Day all,

My local Hobby Shop has an outside frame 2-8-0 on special.

I was wondering if there were any common problems with these locos, or are they generally reliable?

My outdoor mainline is a little under 100' long & the locos only get a couple of hours running time a month, at most.
I think I'll have to build a spur & shed, to reduce the setup times.

HO / M-10000 UP StreamLiner
November 02, 2008, 05:25:08 AM
I'm not really into Diesels, unless they're unusual, such as a BL-2.

So the M-10000 was greatly anticipated.

The only problem is the exorbitant price tag!

Consider the coaches, for example, assuming they are equal in quality to BLi's California Zephyrs, then they are worth $69.99 RRP.

That's $140 from the $425 price, leaves $285 for the Loco, which does not have a sound decoder or even DCC!

Let me put a little perspective on that.
PCM-130 NYC Sharknose, RF-16 A, DCC/Sound $249.99 RRP
PCM-164 PRR Sharknose, BF-16 A, No Sound.  $159.99  RRP
Brand X U.P. M-10000 loco ONLY, No Sound/DCC Ready Est. $285.00 OUCH!

I'm sure these are very nice, but I guess I'll have to miss out.

Pity Bachmann didn't make these. I'm sure they would have been very affordable.

General Discussion / 00 SCALE POLL
March 06, 2008, 10:57:32 PM

G'day All,

There is an online Poll for 00 Scale Locos & Rolling Stock currently running in Model Railway Express e-Mag.

Hornby & Bachmann UK take an interest in this poll, & although the most popular items on the list may not be built, other factors such as availability of Engineering Drawings, difficulty of manufacture & competition in the market place; to name a few, contribute as well.

I know a few of you who read this forum are interested in OO scale British Outline, so, thought you may be interested in participating.

The ONLINE poll is set out with three columns.
The first is the "Period", on a drop down menu. BR, SR, LMS, etc
Then there is your loco choice; be prepared to briefly describe your choice [eg : LMS 4-6-2 Princess class].
The last column is the number of locos of each type, you would purchase.

You can choose up to ten items on your list.
You can only vote Once as it recognizes your IP address & prevents you from voting again.

Look for  "2008 Wish List Pol" on the left side of the screen.

Good Luck.

HO / Blackstone K-27
February 12, 2008, 04:26:22 AM

G'Day All,

I was wondering if anyone has a Blackstone K-27, with OEM Tsunami sound.

I wanted to know if the chuff rate was correctly synchronized to the wheel movement at different speeds & loads. This being a common problem with OEM tsunami products. :-\

HO / 2-10-2 USRA HEAVY.
December 26, 2007, 10:22:01 PM

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas?

It was a quiet family day today, no friends or relatives; We were all playing with our new toys.

I received a Walthers USRA HEAVY 2-10-2. I hitched her up & sent her up a 2% grade with 24 hoppers & caboose, but she lost traction half way up.

I removed the caboose & six hoppers & she got her footing and moved on.

My USRA LIGHT 2-10-2, just hauls this load on the same section of track.

I had a look at the Heavy & decided the Sprung Pony Trucks were possibly unloading the Drivers. I removed the front spring & tried again - This time it hauled 24 hoppers, but stalled with the caboose.

Off came the rear truck spring & the caboose was included in the consist.

The modified Front Pony truck doesn't find any track irregularities either. The spring tended to make the lateral movement stiff & so the truck had a memory of the last curve, & flanged the rail on one side once reaching a straight.

All's well, that ends well.

Happy New Year.

G'Day,

I found a very interesting video on Track gauge. It is Canadian, & follows NMRA HO standards. See Track Video.

This is something I urge everyone to watch. It graphically shows the relationship between the critical parts of a set of points & wheels.

Apart from Modelers, I believe manufacturers staff should look at this too.

The video is produced by Tim Warris; who proved derailments can be a thing of the past - See Tilt Table.
He only stopped after 50,000 perfect cycles because the Train show staff wanted to close the show & go home.  :)

HO / Well,Well,Well....Three holes in the ground.
November 29, 2007, 05:36:36 PM

G'day all,

I recently bought three Bachmann 2-8-0's at a garage sale for $15.
I was told they either run badly or don't run at all.
That's great, just what I wanted - spare detail parts, tenders  etc. :)

I arrived home & decided to give them a run before disassembling them.
I noticed they had dirty wheels, so cleaned them, which showed the lack of plating left.
These were very old, well run spectrum locos.

The first one ran smoothly, so is a keeper......damn! :-\

The second one was a little rough & noisy,,, a few drops of oil & it ran smoothly, so, a keeper......damn!  :o

The third ran well on the straight track & right hand curves, but not left. Inspection of the electrical pickups revealed extreme ware on one side.
This loco must have spent its entire life on a left hand oval.
If I can acquire a set of electrical pickups from Bachmann’s parts division, I'll end up with yet another keeper.......Damn!  :'(

Well, well, well,     there must be a Moral to this story...... ???

HO / Buzzing Decapod
June 25, 2007, 08:22:28 PM
Hi All,

I have four Russian Decapods; one from the first batch, & three bought over the last 18 months. The three newer ones all have Buzzing motors when running foreward. They are all 'DCC ready', so no chip fitted.

I am currently using a Bachmann Magnum DC throttle, but it also occurs on an H&M [smooth] DC as well.

When enough power is supplied to turn the wheels, the motor hums & buzzes, sort of a Waw-Waw-waw sound. this buzzing continues no matter what speed it is run, although the faster you go, the quieter it is; though still audiable. It initially buzzes in reverse, but this stops when the wheels are moving continuously from very low speeds.

Has anyone encountered this problem before, & more importantly, solved it?

I think this was mentioned on the old Bachmann message board, Alas.

Hi all,
Just a question about MAP.

Seen on a website :
BLi & PCM now have MAP pricing Minimum Advertised Pricing. 20% off RRP.

Does this mean dealers are no longer allowed to "free trade" in the US?

G'day All,

Take a look at this site.
It is of the Central New Jersey Bronx Terminal.
The trackwork is fabulous.
It has a couple of videos as well.
I'm sure it will look great when it's completed.

General Discussion / Different Road Numbers
February 16, 2007, 05:24:39 PM

G'day All,

I Bought another Western Maryland 2-8-0 the other day. It is the DCC version. It carries a different Road number on the cab, & this is the only reason I bought it.

My Decaling skills........well, lets not talk about that. :-[

I have always been confused why Bachmann US does not use different road numbers on their locos every year or two to create some variety. The practice is rife in British outline.

So the question is....

Would you buy a second loco,   of the same type,   if it had a different number?

After 30 years in the business Victor of Discount Hobby Warehouse is calling it a day. Very Sad. He closes the doors for the last time in July.

I first met [online] Victor a few years ago when searching for a Bachmann Southern 2-8-0 in Black. Since then he has handled most of my purchases, with a rather cheeky wit.

On one occassion, I wrote "I cannot wait 'til my loco arrived". To which he quipped, "like anticipating a new girlfriends first kiss?"

On another occasion I mentioned how "I loved his personal service & prompt emails".... wait for it....He replied "I love yo' money".

When I wanted to change my order from item 31224 [D&RGW loco].....  "I'll book you on the 31223 from Denver".

Well, all good things come to an end, & although I'll miss his entertaining transactions, I wish him all the best.

Sheldon, There seems to be confusion about DHW. Victor runs DHW in Huntley, Illinois, not the one in San Diego. http://www.discounthobbywarehouse.net/

G'day all,

I was hoping one of you would remember the name of the Working Steam Railway[Narrow Gauge I believe, in the US], that was running tourist trips.
The town council was going to have the tracks ripped out & the purway turned into Cycle Paths & the locos as static displays. Unfortunately that's all I recall.
It was one of the threads on the old forum.
I wanted to find out what happened to it -  did it get a reprieve?.
