General Discussion / Handrail stanchions
July 16, 2023, 11:28:49 PM
I wanted to share some information regarding the black plastic O scale handrail stanchions that apparently are no longer available on the Bachmann website.  I have an older Williams SD45 that has wire handrails and black plastic handrail stanchions.  Due to age, several of the stanchions tabs that fit into the stanchion holes on the engine shell have broken off.  I have looked at length for replacements, without success, online on Ebay and on Google.  No luck.  Today, I came up with a replacement.  Although not an exact replacement, I took several of my daughter's black wire hairpins, cutting them in half with a channel lock.  Once the hair pin was separated into two pieces, I measured the handrail length and took a vice grip and cut it to length.  I than formed a loop on one end to fit onto the wire handrail, and bent the other end so the hairpin took on the shape of the letter "L".  The shorter length of the "L" is short enough, and the correct diameter to fit perfectly into the factory pre-drilled stanchion hole in the engine shell.

I hope that this information is useful to others who enjoy collecting and operating older Williams engines as much as I do.

I am looking for ornamental horns, headlight lens, headlights, number boards, 5-chime horns, handrails, and handrail stanchions (short and long) for SD45's that I recently finished painting.  No availability for any of these parts on the Bachmann website.  Any suggestions on where to find them?  No luck in researching on Ebay.

Williams by Bachmann / Baldwin Sharknose A unit parts
February 16, 2021, 10:08:01 AM
I am trying to locate the mounting screws for attaching the rear steps to the chassis of an O scale Baldwin Sharknose A unit.  Due to my carelessness, the missing screw is impossible to find in my train room.  Attempts to find a compatible screw at a hardware store/big box store has been futile.  Any suggestions would be welcome on where to find them?

I purchased a dummy Williams PA-1, with the intent to upgrade it to a powered unit.  It appears to be an early Williams product.  Are there still available dummy upgrade kits available for older units, like this? If so, from where?  I have had no luck locating anything on Ebay.  If available, are dummy upgrade kits compatible for other 6 wheel Williams products (SD45, SD90)?

I am interested in running multiple powered Williams SD90's in tandem.  Using a Lionel ZW transformer.  Any suggestions?
