The ditch lights were added during restoration.
They are required equipment.

On30 / New 4-6-0
August 10, 2009, 09:47:24 AM
Guys

Here are my first impressions on the new 4-6-0.

It's "BIG" when I first placed it next to my other loco's, it appeared to overwhelm them.

It isn't actually that large when you take into account the driver size compared to the 2-8-0
and the 2-6-0.

Size: It is 13 3/4" over the coupler faces, the 2-8-0 is 12 3/4" most of the difference is the tender length.
The wheelbase is 11 5/8" just a little over 46ft in 0 scale it will fit on a 50ft turntable.
The height is 3 1/4" from the rail head with the capped stack,  note the whistle is just a bit taller.
The width measured at the rear of the tender is 2 1/8" this is wider than any of the other loco's.
The engine weight is over 2lb w/o the tender.

Running:  It runs very smoothly and quietly no gear whine and I didn't see any surging when going
downgrade.  It was pulling five coaches.
None of my curves are over 20"r and I have one that is a tight 18"r with gaps in the rails
because it leads onto a lift out, I had no problems with the pilot truck at any time.

The loco is equipped with Bachmann's new decoder,  it is smaller than the previous decoders and
seems to work much better.

The pilot truck link needs to be adjusted for better up and down movement.  I found that it would occasionally derail at the crest of one of my grades because the truck could not follow the change in grade.

Overall one heck of a loco,  its a keeper.

When you are at a show look around for a Penn Line whitcomb switcher.

They are diecast and are qiute heavy.  It has a Pittman dc60 motor that
can be isolated easily and does not draw a lot of current.

I had one many years ago and it is very powerful and reliable.

They are similar in appearence to the 0n30 davenport but it has a steam
type sand dome on top.

I will keep my eyes open for one,  and will pick one up for you if you want.

General Discussion / Re: EZ Command Question

Do not connect both systems to the same track!!

there is a good possibility that you will destroy both systems.

Use a jump throttle with the EZ Command, or add a Cab 04p
to the NCE system.  This way you can control two trains independently.

The cab 04p can be used with all NCE systems.

When you program your loco 1225 a four digit address the 2 digit address remains.
To run the loco with the origonal address you have to re-activate it on the programming track.

The process is explained in the NCE manual.

The easiest way is to add a cab to the NCE system.

C.S.S.R.

You need to put a 680 ohm resistor in series with the led.

If you want the led to light in both directions you will also
need to insert a bridge rectifier in the circuit.  With the ac
terminals to the motor.  You still need the resistor.

The layouts you linked to would also work nicely
with a Plymouth or Whitcomb industrial switcher
or even an 0-4-0 steamer.  For those wishing to
model an earlier period.

Really well done,  Thanks for sharing.

I could spend hours picking up and setting out on your layout.

You should submit your layout to Carl Arendt.

Excellent scenery also.

It is a PRR train phone antenna.
They predate radio like is now used.

It was an inductive system, not radio.

It didn't work system wide like radio, only in areas
near major terminals of junctions.

9 yr old NCE Power Pro 5a with 1 pro Cab, 2 dual control digital cabs O4e, and 1 single cab O4p.  1 Soundtraxx PTB-100 and 1 ACER laptop for programming.
14 Tortoise machines, two with Hare decoders set for auto-throw w/timed (30sec) return.
All turnouts in reach are controlled with ground throws.  All turnout positions are shown on track diagram with led's
2 Power-Shield reversing circuit breakers for reverse loops.  1 PSX-AR for turntable.  No signals operation is by train order only.

The loco that you have is a "Mantua Classic" made by Model Power.

To determine the type of connector call  1-800-628-2803 this is the
Model Power number,  they may be able to send you the paperwork
for your loco as well.

They are in Farmingdale NY, Eastern time.

12" radius is the recommended absolute minimum radius.

Build a small test track and try it out before you commit to
building your layout.  also check your track plan to see if
you can use 12.5 or 13" radius curves.

On30 / Re: capacitor ??
June 09, 2009, 07:21:43 PM
Chris

It is a capacitor across the headlight, there is also one
on the backup light.

With the loco facing away from you.

The one for the headlight is just to the left of the 8 pin
header. The one for the backup light is at the rear center
of the board just above the half circle notch at the center
of the board.

You can add short lengths of wire to extend them to get the clearance you need.

Does this help?
