Title: Big Hauler 'Gramps' tank cars
Post by: armorsmith on December 15, 2016, 02:01:56 PM
Better late than never, but I noticed last night as I was preparing a car to be re-numbered that the reporting marks are U.T.I.X. 11050 in stead of U.T.L.X 11050. I have had about 10 of these cars for years and never noticed that.

Hi guys,

Union Tank Car Company did use different reporting marks over the years.  They were used to tell the difference between cars that were in free roaming service and cars leased to specific customers.

Ones I have found so far are UTX  UTBX  UTCX ans UTLX.

Bill,

Did a Google search for UTIX reporting marks and found only one entry defining a car/type.  http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsPicture.aspx?id=863284

FWIW....

Interesting photo Bob!   maybe we will someday find a pic of the gramps cars with the UTIX as well, but I have never seen a picture of one.  In some photos it looks like the L crosses a row of rivets which make the L look like an I.  Maybe Bachmann use one of those photos as a guide for the model.

Bill,

I have done a bunch of research and found 14 numbers associated with the Granps tank cars. Somewhere I read that that was the number Lafayette Hughes leased and painted so his grandchildren would know which ones were his. I am having a full set of all the numbers made by Stan Cedarleaf, and will most likely give him permission to print for whomever wants to pay the price of the set. They are scaled for the 1:22.5ish Bachmann Big Hauler series of cars.

To the best of my search, they are all UTLX numbers. And all the cars were in the framless number sequence. I could post the list if interested.

Bob,

Posing the list might be helpful to others relettering the cars!

OK Bill ... here goes.....

This list of numbers is based on prototype pictures I have either found on the internet (and I look for fraud-o-graphs), and a document I found on the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Schenic RR web site. And please also note that the prototype cars are all framless  cars.

11037
11039
11041 thru 11045
11048 thru 11050
11053
11054
11056
11057

Hope this will assist folks in doing, as I am, building an 'oil can' train of Gramps cars.
