Large / Replacement Bulbs
July 25, 2009, 01:29:55 PM
I'm swapping out the head and rear lamps on a 38 ton Shay with a smaller Ozark oil lamp.
It uses a grain of wheat bulb vertically.

I'm using DCC with the original Bachmann board striped out with the QSI magnum board.

I'm not sure on what bulb to use and what voltage? Anything through Radioshack that is recommended?

Thank You

Large / 3 Truck Shay...Locked? Truck
June 01, 2009, 11:01:16 PM
I picked up my first 3 truck Shay. The 3rd truck is locked. Before I start taking things apart, I want to make sure it was not intended to be locked.

It will not move horizontally.

Thanks

Large / Help with QSI install 2-6-6-2
January 15, 2009, 10:59:44 AM
The new updated board that is in the Mallet, is a little different
from the K27. This new board has a direct output for the speakers.

I went and replaced the dummy chip with the QSI Aristo chip. Plugged the speaker
into the QSI chip, not the bachmann board.

When I give it power, I get one short burst of sound, and that is it. I also tried using the speaker out on the board and a secondary QSI chip.

Ummm, is there something that I'm missing? With the K-27... I plugged in the speaker to the QSI chip and intalled on the board and everything was working.

I'm sure it's something easy that I'm overlooking. Any suggestions?

Large / Mallet Speaker Recommendation
January 07, 2009, 01:46:14 AM
Those of you that have installed a sound unit. Can you recommend a 3" speaker for me.

I will be using a QSI aristo chip. I have several QSI HP300S 8 ohm 3" speakers on hand. I have one in a K-27 Tender, in which I had to raise the board to fit.

Looks like I will not be able to do that with the Mallet and there is no clearance for this speaker, which has a large magnet at 1.7".

Any other 3" 8ohm, higher wattage speakers out there with a lower profile. All I have found were 3" but only .5 watts.

Thanks

Large / Consolidation Gear Parts #
November 16, 2008, 11:00:32 PM
I have a consolidation with a cracked gear. I can not find my parts diagram to get the parts number. Can someone that has there parts diagram, tell me what the part number is. It is the first Gear, that is visible when you take off the gear cover on the 3rd axel.

It's a bummer. I purchased it earlier in the year, when most online vendors were closing them out. It only had 1 hour of tun time, before it stopped moving. The gear is cracked through and is not grasping the teeth on the axel.

Is this something that I have to order through the service dept?
Barry's rupgrade would be ideal, but is out of my budget at the moment.

Thank You

Large / K-27 Counterweight Link
August 06, 2008, 07:28:57 PM
Sorry I'm obviously over looking it.  Can someone point me to the link that has the details on how to tell if I have have the previous run with the faulty  counterweights.

I had received my K-27 a few months ago and it did not have a sticker on the box stating new counter weights. I had completely forgot to check, yep that busy.

I think I remember that one of the test was to hold one counterweight and move the opposite weight and that if their was allot of movement, then it's bad. Mine only moves slightly, less than 5%.

Large / K-27 cab detail piece
June 20, 2008, 12:05:46 AM
I'm not sure if I'm missing a piece on my K-27 or it's prototypical (whatever it might be).
On the right side inside the cab, beneath the engineer seat there are 2 pins just above the floor boards. Are those pins in place to hold a detail part? They just seam to be out of place.

Also can someone recommend on which Labelle lubrication I could use for my first run. I have 102, 108 & PTFE grease sitting around. Not sure what is appropriate.

Much Apprecited

Large / Recomended sound for a Porter
February 06, 2008, 10:54:57 PM
Can someone recommend a sound system for the Side Tank Porter. I'm looking into the Sierra system for my Consolidation, but unsure about the Porter due to the size. Also what size speaker would I use directly in the engine.

Thanks

Large / Spectrum Porter Died
January 30, 2008, 11:21:06 PM
I had picked up a Spectrum side tank porter about 3 weeks ago. I had ran it for about an hour and a half and put the engine away. Pulled it out tonight (a week later) and engine would not run. It lights up, but the motor is not responding.

What are some steps I can take to determine what might be the problem?
I have never worked on any of my model trains, but am pretty handy. Since the engine is not an overly expensive engine & I can't see paying half of what I had originally paid ($110), to have it repaired by a store. Unfortunately I did not register the engine for the warranty.

If the motor is blown, would I be able to purchase one online. I assume I would get all the info off the old motor.

Much Appreciated

Large / Minimum Radius
December 02, 2007, 02:02:02 PM
First post to the forum. I just started collecting G scale trains. I currently run Japanese N Scale and wanted to get an outdoor layout going of Large scale American Steam. My first purchase was the Spectrum Consolidation. I have started picking up Aristo Steel straight track. What is the recommended radius for the consolidation. Because of space, I ideally would like to keep it at 6.5'. I can get 8' if I re-vamp thing a bit. I noticed the spectrum freight cars require 8'. So I'm not sure how they would run & look on 6.5'.
