Title: Replacement gears for a Baldwin 2-4-2
Post by: Jeffb on February 11, 2011, 12:22:59 PM
Been given an old non running  2-4-2 Baldwin- White Pass and Yukon -- number 9 tender loco part no 91119.
Motor is ok but the idler gears are missing. Are they available anywhere???

Did you check the Parts & Service page?

Dear Jeff,

Not sure of your skill level (Mine is basic, at best), but what about replacing the drive train with an after-market unit ?  The question is do they exist.  My Aristo Rogers 2-4-2 runs like a charm.  Perhaps the Aristo drive train could be installed in your Columbia (?) .

Any suggestions from Loco Bill or Wade Colyer ?

Would Micro-Mark have gears you might be able to cobble up ?  Just a thought.

Best Wishes,

Jack

jeff-

The parts page doesn't show the 2-4-2 mechanism but perhaps the 4-4-0 unit will work. Also, call service even though the parts page doesn't show the Columbia parts. (It's a long out of production locomotive.) I sent one in a couple of years ago and they put it all back in order. If that all fails, contact Northwest Short Line. They have tons of gears and motors as well as expertise.  Good luck.

Dear Jeff and Don,

Thanks to Don for mentioning NSWL.  Here is a link to their page that lists the gears:
