Williams by Bachmann / Re: Advice: O gauge chassis

Will,

Would you like to explain that a little better?

What is the scale that you are reffering to?
What equals one foot?

What is the track gauge?

The PRR and the B&O lost their colorful schemes much earlier than some.
In the east there were the following that I consider above average.
L&N,ACL,SBD,L&NE,NH,IC,GM&O,Chessie System,Family Lines,Monon.
My point is that after you get the three tone B&O and the pin stripe PRR,
there are still many more that do not duplicate those.

TS,

There are many WbB locos that I would like to have.My first problem is financing, the same that real railroads had. :)
I have a tendency to buy my favorite roads first, the PRR and B&O neither of which were known for eye-catching paint schemes.
Now I am getting old and if I want to put some colorful locos on my layout I will need to forgo some of my favorite roads locos
and pick up some of the next group.

The body shell from a non Williams loco, even though often copied from Lionel, will probably NOT fit the Williams chassis of the same type of loco. The best bet is probably a repaint of the loco into a scheme that you would like to have.My problem is that WbB already makes probably
a hundred locos I would buy if I could. The same is true of other companies. When I do buy a loco it is after much hand wringing,in depth thought and counting of pennies.
I have three locos with TMCC that are seldom run using TMCC.My eyes are old and the very fine detail that is found on the high priced locos is almost a waste to me.It is nice but I have been very happy with my small roster of twenty locos.I have 7 Lionel[3 with TMCC],3 K-Line,1 Atlas,1 RMT[Beep],8 Williams.

Roger:

After about 5 minutes of running, I ordinarily will lower the sounds on the Lionel and MTH engines to a level that is less overwhelming.  The downside is this also lowers the volume of the horn sounds, which is what I really enjoy the most.

Curt

OK.I agree and see the problem.

Curt,

Why not lower the sound level on the Lionel and MTH locos?
With several locos running with sound at a high level on a relatively small layout like mine,@12' X 20',the sounds become a little too much.
I have noticed that the HO guys don't seem to run their trains at high sound levels for,IMHO,a more realistic effect.

Hi Curt,

They are in our warehouse waiting for you to buy them! If your dealer does not have them, tell him to bug his distributor.

Regards,

3rail

Now that's the kind of answer you should like to hear.

Some PRR electrics ran with both pantographs raised.

Many of the electrics were seldom turned so the front
was the end that led.The crew changed ends.
Many interurbans and street cars were operated the same way.
The motor man took the needed handles and moved to the other end.
On a trolley the pole on one end would be lowered and the other was raised.

Curt,

I don't particularly care for the sounds other than whistle/horn and bell.
I had a few Williams before Bachmann [I think] that had very weak horn
and bell sounds.I opened it up and adjusted a screw on what appeared
to be a very small potentiometer and was able to get acceptable sounds.

The GP-30 is on my list when a C&O or Family Lines scheme is made.
However I may need to settle for something else.I'll be patient.

Williams by Bachmann / Re: AC or DC
March 10, 2013, 10:59:15 PM
The HO folks operate with DC current and the O  three rail with AC.
I realize the 3R O actually runs on DC but some of the HO guys may
not unless they also do 3R O.

Sometimes the wiring from the trucks is too tight and will limit the turning radius.

Usually you can remove the body, find the wire from each truck and pull it out a little to
make it longer. If it won't pull you can remove the tie that bundles the wire. There may be two bundles.

That article did not sound very encouraging about the sounds. It said that the sounds couldn't be heard very well when the train was moving because they were too soft and there was no way to make them louder.Over all they were complimentary.

Another exception I must make concerns handrails. It is true that some of the older models like the GP7/9 had flat end hand rails and it seems to imply that this is the first model with round hand rails on the ends.I don't think that is true.IMO the early Williams models were almost  exact copies of Lionel models. If Lionel had flat end hand rails,so did Williams.

Don't misunderstand but that makes me feel better. :)
