The wood cabbed version with the oil headlight looks like an exact match for the Mt. Gretna locomotives. They removed the fenders and added a sand dome.  The Gretna locomotives sand was stored in the fenders. They did have a 4.16% grade on the short line. The pilot may be a tad different as well.

the magnifying glass in the upper right corner will make them larger.

I know they say this 4-4-0 is not based on the Mt. Gretna locomotives, but other than the sand dome and fenders it is pretty much an exact match:

And if you look the sand lines come from the fenders so that is where it was stored.

A few more:

This is the builders photo. After a Forney derailed on it's first trip the railroad ordered this locomotive and it was delivered 10 days later. They didn't have time to take a factory photo so a rep was sent with the locomotive and the above pic was taken.

These are the only 4-4-0 this size ever built in the US.

To try and sum it all up. The boiler is a brass tube. The cab side are 2 layers of .005" brass sheet. The front and back of the cab are styrene. The wooton firebox was formed from .015" aluminum. Some details are from a Atlas 2-6-0 and the rest are RLW http://www.republiclocomotiveworks.com/ castings. I usually just use ACC for glue.

The stock motors flyworm was removed and I used NWSL  http://www.nwsl.com/  1.5mm shafts and universals to transfer motion from the tender. The shaft is supported by 2 bearing block from a old Atlas diesel.

I resized this photo till the drivers were the same size as the model and base all other dimensions off of it:

Inder,

It is a called a "camelback" you can see a guy on the tender deck with a shovel. The fire box door was under the rear awning. The model started as a Model Power 4-4-0 like this one:

Then I moved the motor into the tender since it no longer would fit in the locomotive:

Added some details:

and added paint:

Well if you find a N scale triplex, that would be rare!  ;D

I find the only way to get nice Erie equipment in N scale is to build it myself.

On30 / Re: 2-6-0 drivers/flanges ?

Thanks I will call them.

I should say this isn't a mechanical problem, the locomotive runs pretty good. The wheels are round at the tread that touches the rail.

The flanges are the problem and only visually. If I remove the motor so it will freewheel and push it along off the rails it will bounce because of it rolling on the flanges. On the rails it rolls smooth.

I am modifying and adding a bunch of detail so would hate to have it looking odd running down the track after it's all done.

On30 / 2-6-0 drivers/flanges ?
August 26, 2007, 09:57:11 PM
Hello,

I just bought a On30 2-6-0 and the driver flanges are out of center from the driver making the flange look egg shaped when going down the track. They look to be cast with the wheel.

This problem has been confirmed with someone else as well, we bought them from different places.

If I call Bachmann service and go through all the trouble of getting new wheels will they be the same?

Thanks
Chris

Still trying to find a real locomotive that looks like this to talk myself into buying one, I dug these up:

Both 3' gauge.

I still wanna see that catalog photo!

How large are the On30 4-4-0's drivers?

I see NCNG #& has 41" drivers, but they are spaced further apart. The models driver are further apart than the Mt. Gretta locomotives so that isn't the prototype.

I have drawings of a 30" gauge 4-4-0 used in Brazil, but it is outside framed. It has 38" drivers

It would be nice if Bachmann posted a prototype photo so I would be more inclined to buy one.

Thanks
Chris
