General Discussion / Re: New Locomotive Suggestions

How about a Southern Ps-4 or a 3 truck Heisler? (Specifically Cass #6)
Or even a re-release of the two truck climax WITH improved gears.
I very much approve of a N&W 4-8-0 being added to the range.

I have heard of and been to those websites and they seem knowledgeable, but the decoder I would intend to use is the Loksound SELECT decoder, not a 3.5, 4.0, or micro.

Very well, and what would the chuff rate be set at(CV116)? I do not wish to use the chuff cam option for the full Tsunami decoder. I tried the Soundtraxx chuff rate equation(115.9 X Speed / Driver diameter X gear ratio), but it seems too slow. The reason that I would want the full Tsunami is that it supports more CVs, namely, equalizer and reverb. The factory decoder does not support these CVs. I ch eked the factory CV list and they are not there. Links: http://www.soundtraxx.com/factory/OEM%20pages/Bachmann/HO%203%20Truck%20Shay.pdf

The reason I like the Loksound is that it has many more whistle choices than Tsunami.
Again, any help or suggestions appreciated.

Hello, I am contemplating, whether or not to purchase the Bachmann Tsunami factory sound equipped 3 truck shay, or to purchase a non-sound shay and upgrade it to a full Tsunami or a Loksound Select geared steam decoder. Any help, advice, recommendations, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if you guys are still monitoring this topic, but from my research, using the soundtraxx chuff rate formula, 115.9 X top speed / driver diameter X gear ratio, the proper chuff rate setting should be, given that the prototype of the Bachmann 3 truck shay, Cass shay#5, has a top speed of 13 MPH, a gear ratio of 2.056, and 36 inch drivers, equals a chuff rate of about 86. Where I got the gear ratio and driver diameter is here: http://www.shaylocomotives.com/data/dataframe.htm (Click on 1500 to 1700, then click on sn-1503)
