Title: 4-6-0 Bachman loco
Post by: steamloco on December 07, 2009, 08:17:16 PM
Bach Man,

I picked up a used Bachman 1995 vintage 4-6-0 track power gauge 1 loco--maybe a big hauler.  It runs and has chuff.  However, the smoke unit must be burned out, as it won't smoke, even after putting smoke fluid in the reservoir. The smoke switch in the front of the smokebox is turned on.  I assume the smoke unit is burned out.  Is this part available, and, is there a procedure to replace it?

Thanks for your help.

It is replaceable on the couple I bought this year. Here's a general outline of what's involved.
Whether identical to what they did 14 years back, don't know.

Remove boiler shell (that is a process in itself)

Smoke unit is cast metal unit which is attached to upper boiler shell under stack with 2 long screws.
Switch attaches to smoke unit brass tabs which go around those screws.

Might want to clean fluid residue off inside of boiler molding under stack while you're at it.

Unscrew, swap out smoke units, screw back in.

Screw boiler top back on (that is also a process in itself) and you're on your way.

Since there's allergies and asthma in the home I removed smoke units completely.
Nobody else living here probably needed to be inhaling the fluid vapors anyway when running indoors.

Gave mine away to friends for spares.

Now, as for part availability, can't tell you that.
