Large / Bachmann Service
December 13, 2014, 08:19:38 PM
Want to thank Bachmann for its quick and efficient service.  Sent a couple of large scale engines in for repair/service ( a tad expensive--$75.00 each) and each was returned in just a couple of weeks....and all seems to be in order.    Thanks all.....and happy holidays as well.

Large / three truck shay
November 09, 2014, 06:25:18 PM
I have been thinking about purchasing a Bachmann 3 truck shay.   Reading the review in Garden Railways raises a question.   The end of the article ends with the following: " Note:  there is an issue that customers should be aware of regarding the wiring, which left unattended to, may preclude the need to return the unit for service.  A full tutorial with pictures is available on our website:"  a link is provided that does not work.   :(

Does anyone know what that problem might be...and if it has been corrected in the models that are on shelves at the present time?   Thank you the help.

General Discussion / East Broad Top #11
September 01, 2014, 05:57:07 PM
Lee Rainey's EAST BROAD TOP has a builder photo of #11 at Baldwin in 1908. (pg90)  The engine has a metal cab at the time of "birth."

IMAGES OF RAIL: THE EAST BROAD TOP (Kenneth C. Springirth) page 26, has a photo of her in the "early 1930's at Rockhill Furnace round house...."with most certainly a smaller wooden cab.

I thought that this would never have been done....why would a company go from a metal to a wood cab?  Any photos of #11 other than the IMAGES one show her with a metal cab....but I don't think there are many photos of her at all.....Anyone any idea?   Thanks.

Large / christmas???!!!
September 01, 2014, 12:44:44 PM
it's time for me (already!!) to start dropping those little hints about the train stuff that I would enjoy as Christmas gifts.....any chance of Bachmann releasing/announcing other large scale products than those already announced?

Large / connie advice
July 21, 2014, 11:44:13 AM
I have a couple of Connie's dating back to the original release.   ( Very long time ago)  They are working great (still think it is one of Bachmann's better engines) on my indoor layout.  But with all the failure of the plastic gear, I have purchased a brass gear and axle for each one of them.  Considering these are of the original run, would it be a sound move to send them to Bachmann and ask them to replace axle/gear (nope.....not going to do it myself) for the $75.00.  A call to Bachmann's service department provided me with the info that they might have been replaced already and might never fail.
   Thanks for the advice.

Large / C 19/LGB switches
July 20, 2014, 02:22:58 PM
When my C19s exits an LGB 16000 switch from the diverging route, the blind drivers short at the frog.   No big problem.  i have place a very short piece of theatrical spiking tape on the straight rail.   But after a period of time and with track cleaning the tape must be replaced.   Anyone else have this problem with the engine and LGB 16000 switches...  Have you come up with a more permanent solution?

For  me it has to be the Connie.  Did not buy a 1.20 engine until it was released even though the shay came first.   I love rod engines and when it was announced I held my breath.  I used LGB 1600 track and switches....would it be able to negotiate those?  When the reviews were in,  I received my first engine and opened the box.   It was an event.  No shinny gold and silver that "toyed" the LGB engines.  Flat black...beautiful. It ran slowly on my indoor layout (my only layout)..and looked ok with my mostly LGB rolling stock (long gone now) and Pola buildings.

Sure it had or has got issues...  I run inside, so perhaps some have not yet made themselves evident....though a tender truck just came apart on one of them plastic just broke.  I have a couple Connies and they still run great.  I have no hilly terrain so lurching is no problem....and they run slowly and steadily even on the 1600 radius.  Its small size is super on my small indoor layout 14x22 in the basement.

I have purchased one of everything...'cept the three truck shay.  Each seems to have some disadvantage.  Forney and industrial mogul don't pull much....2-8-2 is a bit too big for the layout, though it does perform admirably... but really looks Rio Grande (big fan of the EBT)!! (Have I made enemies that that remark :) ?) 2-6-6-2 is a bit too big to look at home and I find it difficult to control a constant speed.  (track power for basement)...could be my track work..etc. Not a big shay fan...and I only have the first issue of the Climax...not a super runner.  I do love the Heisler and it performs well...and is even a semi-rod engine....sort of.  The 4-4-0 and the 4-6-0 are neat little engines too.  But they are definitely the wrong time period for me...late 30's to perhaps early 50's for me.  The C-19 is pretty cool and performs well on my small layout...but again looks Rio Grande...yup I know EBT did have one...bit Connie looks more like and Eastern brute.  Does look good with the Anniversary Annie (1.22.5) too.

Anyways I am happy with the Bachmann engines I have purchased...hope there might be something down the line (can anyone say...EBT #11?)
Small and powerful!

You got a favorite?

Large / long winter

Large / k 27 screws
March 06, 2014, 12:59:20 PM
I hope to find about 8 of the screws that hold the counterweights to the axle of the k 27.  Of course they are not available.  So I looked carefully at the Connie and the screws look to be the same (# 10320) so I did a search and though the results said that number wasor an HO engine....I ordered....mistake.  They are not the same...
Anyways does anyone know where I might obtain screw for the K 27 axles?  Thanks for the help.

How do you remove the wheel covers from the Annie so you can remove the wheel from the axle?
   Thanks for the help.

Large / c19 pheonix sound question
February 22, 2014, 01:26:17 PM
Hi....hope someone might have some suggestions with this.   First of all....i did call PHOENIX twice about my concerns and their two comments were:  (1)Power supply was not adequate (2) i have done something wrong.  No solution was suggested.

The engines are track powered and the boards are pb11's.  i THOUGHT i followed the directions on PHOENIX cite.  But these are a first attempt for me and it looks like I have done something wrong....but can figure out what.

When under load and well above and well below 8 volts, the engines runs fine.  But just below and just above (and at 8V) they (same thing with two of these C-19) draw fluctuating current from 1.3 to 1.7 amps approx. per wheel rotation.  As a result the engine "lurches" during this narrow range.

If I remove the batteries, they run fine at all voltages.  Attach the batteries back in and the engines lurch again.  Of course the simple answer is to leave out the batteries, but then there is not sound at very low voltages.

There are Phoenix sound systems in other engines (2-8-2) on my track powered layout...and Sierra sound as well.   Those engines show no problems.  I installed the Sierra but not the Phoenix in the 2-8-2s.

It's obvious I know little of electricity and probably made myself as clear as mud.....but any suggestions as how to eliminate the "lurching" at 8 would be appreciated.   Thank you

Large / Unproduced engine
September 13, 2013, 09:20:42 PM
This is a memory thing....and I am not sure I have it correct...but...a few years ago... I THINK ...Bachmann announced that they were going to produced a one of a kind engine that had two trucks and each powered by its own cylinders.  There was a major outcry and the announcement was withdrawn.  I think that the rail truck was manufactured in its place.  I think there was a picture of the engine shown on this site....does anyone recall?  If a picture of such and engine does exist, I would enjoy seeing it.  It look somewhat like a Heisler but with cylinders on each truck.  Did such a critter exist?  Thank you.

Large / detail parts
August 21, 2013, 12:43:27 PM
Does someone make specific detail parts for the modeler to purchase that would be easily fitted to the mogul and 4-4-0 so that they might be updated?  Domes and cab would be difficult for me to find.  Headlight....easy; add a generator and a more modern engine would be had.

Large / what might be next for Large Scale
August 19, 2013, 01:59:17 PM
Any thoughts as to where or what Bachmann might go with its Large Scale Product in the future.

I have no interest in diesel or traction (1:20.3, 1:29 or other wise)...though I realize that others most certainly do. I was a bit dismayed with the new announcement.  Many of us have most certainly made our hopes and wishes known on this forum....but does anyone have an idea of... NOT WHAT YOU WANT, but rather where Bachmann is heading?  What .... if any new Large Scale products might we see from Bachmann?

Just you thoughts might be interesting...of course if you know for sure....input would be appreciated.

Large / C-19 prototype question
July 25, 2013, 01:40:10 PM
The black unlettered C-19 model has a long diagonal bar or pipe exiting the cab and running down the right side of the boiler, ending up underneath the smokebox attached to a lever.   This is not found on the red, white, black version of the engine.  Was wondering what the function of this might be on the prototype and why it is on one engine and not the other.   Thanks muchly.

Large / other "stuff"?
July 22, 2013, 12:38:01 PM
Does the recent announcement of products mean that we are not going to receive other new large scale products this year?
