Large / k-27 Sierra Sound 9 Volt batt
June 29, 2008, 04:24:40 PM
According to the Bachmann reference:  "When used for DC operation, the track voltage at slow speeds is insufficient to power the sound board.  For best effeccts in slow speed DC operation , a 9 volt battery backup should be added to the Sierra Sound board as per their instructions."  Obviously i know little  by asking this question...but here goes:  i thought th battery from Sierra was 6 volts.  Where do we get the compatable 9 volt battery?  i have only installed one Sierra unit and that was a very long time ago.   So please, excuse the ignorance.
   Thanks for the help.

Large / more brake "stuff"
March 28, 2008, 11:41:14 AM
Could a car or two without air brake gear be included in a consist of those with rigging?...perhaps at the end of the train? ....or would this defeat the safety devices?
  Thanks again.

Large / log car
March 26, 2008, 02:26:36 PM
Bachmann's Large Scale log cars do not come with air-brake cylinders-rigging etc. since most prototypically the would not have had them...i think.  i was wondering if protypes log car might have had air brake rigging in some cases?

Thank for your help.

Large / scale help
March 04, 2008, 07:44:53 PM
hummmm...hope this works.

i have been running Annie and Connie; and have just purchased a K.  i have been using 1/24 scale automobiles with the first two engines.
While the 1/18 scale, my wife feels are much to big

Neither of us have seen narrow gauge in action and are not really able to make a valid comparison.  The green sedan is 1/24 scale and the convertible is 1/18.
Any feeling on the matter that might help me make a decison as to which autos to use.   Thanks.

Large / A new book on the East iBroad Top
February 21, 2008, 04:21:38 PM
i am placing this message in the Large Scale section of Bachmann's Board since most of Bachmann's Large Scale product is based on narrow gauge prototype.

i just receive  IMAGES OF RAIL EAST BROAD TOP RAILROAD, by Kenneth C. Springirth.  (Copyright 2008) Lots of nice pictures and some reading as well.  i am not sure how much will be "new" if you are really familiar with the railroad, but from first appearances, it seems to be informative for those who have an interest in the Broad Top...good pictures for those that like to look at narrow gauge prototypes.  ( i am not associated with the author or publisher!!)  Just appears to be some nice "stuff" here.  i think others might enjoy as well.  It is very similiar to IMAGES OF RAIL MAINE NARROW GAUGE RAILROADS.

Large / narrow gauge transportation of perishables?
February 18, 2008, 02:29:03 PM
Would someone tell me how an North Eastern U.S. narrow gauge line might have transported commodites such as milk, cheese, and uncooked meats? The time period could be anytime from the 1920 to the 1950 (if the line had lasted that long!!) From what i have read, even the EBT did not have reefers.  Perhaps it was the short distances involved and they were not necessary.
  Any info would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Large / comparison K-27 and EBT 12
January 10, 2008, 10:56:44 PM
Can someone direct me to stats for a comparison of both engines in terms of wheel base, overall length, width...etc?  i have tried a couple of books on the EBT, but they do not give the measurements.  i do have those of the K-27.  The net provides great pictures, but i cannot locate measurements.
  Thanks.

Large / telephone #-service
January 10, 2008, 10:14:28 AM
i have heard that the 800 number for service is often not answered at Bachmann.  i remember another number being posted at sometime or other, but in a search, i was unable to find it.   Does anyone know the "other number" that could be reached for service.
  Thanks for your help.

General Discussion / EBT MIKES?
June 22, 2007, 05:36:29 PM
Hello,
Was wondering if anyone could give me the length of EBT's #12 Mikado...just the engine itself;....then the tender.

As the engines got bigger, i think the driver size remain the same.  Did the wheel base change at all?

i have read a couple of things, and pressure, track effort, cylinder size, etc is given but really have not encounter the physical measurements of the engines themselves.

Thanks for your help.

Large / Garden Railways Advertisement....Oooops?
May 03, 2007, 02:11:53 PM
On page 11 of the June 2007 GARDEN RAILWAYS magazine, the ad for Bachmann's new 38 ton, three truck shay can be found...is this correctly phrased?  Should it be 55 ton?

General Discussion / EBT's 2-8-0 and 4-6-0s
April 15, 2007, 10:13:10 PM
i know that EBT is known for her beautiful 2-8-2's.  But i also understand that there were 2-8-0 and 4-6-0s in her history as well.   Could someone tell me where i might find pictures of these engines.   i have never seen any.
  thanks.

Large / 2-8-2
March 01, 2007, 08:00:49 PM
Just saw the advertisement for the brass Mike from RY in GARDEN RAILWAYS.  The minimun turn for the enigine is 8 feet RAIDUS (redundent but... 16 feet DIAMETER)!  i think Accuraft manages to sneek in 8 foot DIAMETER.

If Bachmann does release a 2-8-2, any thoughts as to the mininun turn needed?   Does Bachmann have a "goal" that it would like to achieve in this department?

The engine being released is #14.  If #12 was released, is it a bit smaller so that it could get away with a smaller radii/diameter?

Large / speed formula/voltage+ a shay
February 16, 2007, 05:47:35 PM
Using Hunt's formula from the "general discussion" area, i clock my 38 ton Shay to see at what speed she is running, when i feel she is running at a "good" speed or a specific voltage.

These are things i am taking for granted when i ask my final question.
    1.  all Bachmann 38 ton Shays run basically the same at the same
        voltage
    2.  my volt meter works  (it is OLD) and a swing needle thing.
    3.  the length of the train won't affect the speed toooo much at a voltage
         once the motion is underway.

That being said, at approx. 10 volts, my shay ran a distance of five feet in 9.91 seconds.  IF i use the formual correctly, i get something like 6.9 miles per hour.

To me, it looks like it is MOVING faster than that speed.  But does this sound approximately correct or are there major mistakes on my part?

Thanks for your help.

Large / Centennnial Mogul
February 08, 2007, 07:27:45 PM
Hi,
Just purchased this engine (Cent. Mogul) last week.   Gave it a try and found that it was a beautiful performer...except--it really doesn't like LGB swithches.
Behind the center wheel on each side of the engine, there are posts which extend down inside the rails to guide these center drive wheels and keep them aligned with the track so they do not drop down below the railhead.
These posts seem to hang up on the LGB frog.  Logical that they be removed if this happens.  Which i did do.  But when i did remove the guides, the center wheel does indeed fall below the rail head once in a while (i use LGB 16000 curves and equivalent swithches--layout in my basement) and bind.
A closer look at the guides revealed they were actually composed of a collar with a pin through it and then connected to the support structure.  If  the collar is removed and the pins inserted from the top instead of the bottom of the support, then engine does seem to operate a bit smoother through the swithches.  But still not as nice as Connie or Annie.  (Am i making any sense here??)
i know i read of people experiencing this, on the old form, but never paid attention to it, since i never thought i would purchase this engine.
Wondering if others found solutions for a smooth performance through the LGB switches.
   Thanks
bob
