With doubleheading steam engines, the fun is each engine having its own engineer!  Just like the prototype in the old days!  You need DCC to do this of course.

Talk about intense.  I've done it many times.  It's hard enough to do on a model, so on the prototype it was easy to jerk out a knuckle or a drawbar. Those hoggers on doubleheaded engines had to be experienced old heads.  I don't remember them anymore, but in those pre-radio days there were specific whistle calls by the lead engine to tell the trailing engine what they were doing, like applying brakes in particular..  you can do that on a model railroad also.

Now THIS is fun!

The advent of the diesel made MU operation possible and got rid of all this multiple crew business, which was costly and efficient in many ways.

I have always maintained that diesels were better than steam engines in every aspect, except one..... the "COOL" factor! 😎😎

I have pair of identical Bachmann 4-4-0's that I consisted. I only used one address for both of them. One of them is slower than the other even though they are identical so "like" locos aren't always equal in speed.

Hannah is a good idea for HO tbh there are some coaches we could see in HO here are some of my picks

• Blue Annie and clarabel - as seen in the great race
•Slip coaches - three face variants
•Work unit coach - green blue and orange
•Faceless brown coaches- same color as A&C
•Herenttia with face
•Hannah - Henrietta repaint with new face and lamp on side
•Dexter- red brake coach repaint  with face
•An Ann - Annie repaint with face
•Yin-Long - Annie repaint with face
•Gordon's special coaches - express coaches repaint
•Green express coach with  buffet - green composite coach with buffet lettering on side

Why do all that to get two locomotives to run together when you can program them to do so? The way you are trying to do this, every time you want to speed up or slow down you have to adjust both locomotives, and until you make those adjustments they will fight each other. Can you imagine what would happen on the real railroads if the engineer had to keep running from unit to unit adjusting throttle settings? Thankfully, control of the entire consist as one locomotive dates to the early days of diesels. With speed matching we can do the same on our model trains.

Quote from: Coaltronn on April 25, 2024, 05:13:41 PMwhy don't they have the seasons 7-15 on amazon prime though?

Not sure why Amazon has never added seasons 8-15, but Roku recently added a new live channel called "PBS Retro" and they are currently airing season 7/8 episode programs PBS Kids made back in 2004.  Season 9 episodes will be airing there in May.

As much fun as that would be, I can't see them doing Toad in large scale before Henrietta considering that she's been in higher demand and her tooling could be reused for Hannah while Toad wouldn't offer any other recolor option.

Interesting, so that is a side effect of unsealed bearings?

I could see how pressurizing the gearbox could avoid this, but first report I have read of this... was the loco left outside for a long time? Basically all I can figure was heating and cooling allowed the cooling gearbox to draw moisture with attendant grit into the gearbox.

What are your theories?

General Discussion / Re: Coupler Height Gauge
Last post by Ralph S - April 25, 2024, 04:48:32 PM
For those who are economically strapped, like myself, there is an alternative to purchasing the "Coupler height gauge".
If you are a user of the EZ track, the Bachmann Hayes Bumper (model 44791) from my experience, the actual bumper is a perfect way to determine if your car is at the correct height.  The Hayes Bumper stop should hit the coupler of the car in the center.  When it does that, you can be sure the car coupler height will be where it should be.
See gauge image in Topic (click for image)
or
use that Bachmann EZ track Hayes bumper.

Thanks for the link. That was a cool video. I had never seen a real water spout in operation up close nor a coal chute. I imagine that a lot of these procedures weren't always followed by doing them the safe way.
