I don't think 12 volt- DC would burn up anything. But, AC is definitley the right choice for accesories:

There is a Kalmbach book about wiring that you might want to read. If if you are going to be making a temporary layout, you might just want to re-arrange the track instead  of doing fairly complicated wiring for a beginner. Remember, if the train can reverse it's direction on your layout, there's going to be a short circuit.

Have you googled "DCC decoder Bachmann Spectrum Ballast Spreader" ?

That might help a little bit.

I think Bachmann had a book about E-Z track layouts, but, If I can remember correctly, it's out of print.

I've seen some of those at train shows and on the web. It would make it a LOT easier to letter your car .
