Title: Taking shell off 2-6-6-2 to lubricate
Post by: Aussietrainman on October 14, 2012, 05:09:12 AM
Hi,
My son has a C&O 2-6-6-2 N scale steamer and wants to oil the motor and shafts. I don't know how to take the shell off to lubricate the innards. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

The only thing that you can't lube from the outside is the motor bushings and they generally don't need it. More damage is usually done by over lubing than leaving things alone. The loco's come from the factory with too much lube in the first place.

I just replaced a decoder for a customer in an HO Thomas that I installed for him a couple weeks before because he decided to "lube" his loco. The oil migrated everwhere, got to the motor brushes and shorted things out, causing the decoder to fail.

I agree, just one tiny drop on each gear (if they look "dry" )  from the bottom is more than enough....Mike
