HO / Re: passing it on

Great ideas.  Let me throw my two cents in.

Out of my 5 sons I have only one that has been interested in trains and as he has gotten older he has slowly lost interest.  BUT,  I have one grandson that is really crazy about them.  He can't wait to come over to my house to work on my layout.
One of our favorite things is to watch "Trains and Locomotives" together.  The little bugger is so smart he is always asking questions about trains that ,for the most part, I can answer.  But the other day the show was about the
Challenger and Big Boy.  He immediately noticed that the drive wheels were not in sync.  So, he asked why.  After waiting an embarrassing long time, I told him "Kyle, I just don't know".  So if there are some folks out there who could give me an answer, I would certainly appreciate it.  Does it have anything to do with speed or pulling power?

Thanks, Bill

J3,

I can't believe it.  Just as soon I posted my wish for an USRA Pacific, I read in my MR magazine that Bachmann was offering one.  Man that is fast work!!!!   Thanks a million Mr. B.   My LHS didn't know it was offered either.

Now, I'm going to start wishing for a more modern 4-6-0.  I, of course, will expect the same quick response Mr. B. ;)

Well as long as wishes are posted, I would like to see a more modern 4-6-0 and a USRA 462 Pacific.

Somebody on this forum said that using transmission fluid as a solvent, then rubbing it off, was a good corrosion remover.  Any one ever use that and what were the results?

HO / Black smoke vs white smoke
March 29, 2016, 04:47:21 PM
Didn't now whether to post this on the general threads or HO.  Since more people respond to HO I'll ask my question here.

One of my grandsons and I watch "Trains and Locomotives" on TV and the other day they had a program where a 2-8-0 Consolidation was belching out black smoke in one scene and a few moments later the same engine was throwing out white smoke.  My grandson asked me what was the engine crew doing different that made the smoke black one time and white the next.  Well, I've never thought about that and I told him I didn't know, but I know some good friends that do.  So would someone be kind enough to help me on this question?

Thanks, Bill

Bear, you have a great amount of talent. I wished I had a tenth of that.  I've been working on a Labelle wooden passenger car for almost a year and I haven't finished it yet.  I'm trying to modify it from a closed vestibule to an open vestibule  If I ever get my camera back from my grandson, I'll post a picture of it.

I actually model the Rock Island as seen in Little Rock.  It, of course, has joint trackage and track usage rights to the MOP.  As a result I, on rare occasions, run the Delta Eagle which is composed of a P2K E-8, and two passenger cars in grey and blue livery.  To be honest with you, I don't know if the Delta Eagle ever came through Little Rock, but its fun for a change up.

You guys are truly artists and a blessing to our hobby.  I wish I had one tenth the talent you all have.  Keep up the good work and post those pictures.

Len,
No, I never thought of that!  DUH!!!  I'll give them a call.

Whiz Kid,
Ahhhh, how great minds travel in the same channel.  I tried the magnet a few weeks ago, but for a small area I couldn't reach nothing came up except for about 3 KD springs, around 4 or 5 tacks and a pair of metal pony wheels which I have no clue how they got there.  I think my grandkids had something to do with that.

HO / P2K Driver screw.
November 10, 2015, 02:22:22 PM
I have an old P2K 0-8-0 in which the driver screw (or bolt) has come loose and disappeared somewhere in my roadbed.  It is a threaded screw with a hexagonal head.

Does anyone know of a website in which I could look up a part number and order one?  I've tried Walther's but no luck.

Oh yeah....if anyone has, by chance, their parts sheet for their loco, I would appreciate the parts number.  The screw in question is the one connecting the right rear driver to the right rear wheel.

Thanks, Bill

Thanks guys for the clues.  My first and only attempt at night lighting was about 10 years ago and I connected 4 miniature lights to my AC terminals.  Ahhh, the acrid smoke of failure!   I'll print out your notes and add them to my book.

Thanks again, Bill

I've been out of town for several days and haven't a chance to check my favorite website.  I love the way this post has grown.  But I would like to see some discussion on wiring and power supply.  You guys are getting me motivated to give this a try.

Thanks, Bill
