Title: Dismal Swamp ventelated box car
Post by: br549 on June 01, 2008, 01:28:37 PM
Mr Bachmann,
I am currently searching for a previously released 0n30 ventilated box car with the "Dismal Swamp Railroad " markings. My LHS had one come in a year ago and I missed the purchase. Is this particular car still available and where may I locate one to  purchase  ???? Thanks, ;)

While you wait on the Bach-man’s reply, here is some info.

Not a current production item. Item No. 27654 was last in the Bachmann 2006 print catalog (i.e. 2006 last year produced).

Thanks for the response, I was afraid of that.  My LHS would order in some if they could get them.  It was a neat road name and a big hit.  Please how about a re-run of them Mr Bachmann!  ;) :D finding old stock of that item is nill.

I believe I saw one at my local hobby shop. I can call them tommorrow if you like, or I can e-mail you their phone number and you can call them your self. My e-mail address is in my profile. Bruce

Bob,

I got mine from The Favorite Spot, a seller on that eBag auction site. He lists his shop as a Bachmann dealer. I have done business with them for over a year now and have never had a problem or issue. Thinking about it, a lot of my On30 stuff is from there....

Happy hunting,

Howard

Bob. I am glad you bought the one from Roy's.

True, you may have been able to find one for less, but Roy's is a small store, and we need to keep the local hobby stores in business.

Bob,

Glad you got your Dismal Swamp car ordered. :) I, too, am an avid supporter of my local hobby shops, as I spend at least half of my MRR dollars locally. But sometimes you just can't find what you want or need locally. :( (As an aside, I can almost see the Bachmann offices from where I sit across the river, but most of my local shops don't stock much On30 >:()
We sometimes have to look out of area to larger, better stocked dealers. I've noticed a trend in the hobby lately to bash online vendors, and those who shop with them. ??? What we fail to realize is that many of those vendors are established family run shops with brick and mortar stores. Trainland has been selling from the same two locations for over twenty five years, and the LHS I was at yesterday, and will be returning to today, has been in the same spot as long....The only difference is Trainland is 100 miles from me.
Anyway, I've vented, and will look for that kit, supplies, etc., I've wanted and/or needed locally, and if I can't find it I will look online. The difference is I will deal with MRR specialists and dealers (and there are lots) ;D, not warehouses. Oh yeah, many will be brick and mortar hobby shops.  ;D

That's pretty much how I shop as well.  My LHS does the mail order thing some times that may be all that  keeps the doors open during the slow season. Loco's purchased on line is always the luck of their draw. You might get a diamond or on the other hand a lemon. "Good deals" may not be the best  in the end.  Chances I dont risk very often when it comes to purchasing Loco's. But I have reluctantly

Bob,

I agree wholeheartedly, and do everything I can to keep my money locally for just about everything I do, even above and beyond hobbies. ;D However, economics prohibits many brick and mortar stores from stocking everything for everybody. My first Mogul was purchased at a LHS (actually a Local Train Shop, from Z to G), and the owner was more than happy to offer me a deal on any other On30 stock as he was having a hard time selling the product.  ??? The On30 customer base is just too specialized, therefore small. His biggest seller, Trolley sets at Christmans time.
The shop closest to me is strictly HO, and is reluctant to order me much. (But they do get some of my dollars.)
Yeah, and as I've mentioned, BMann's main office is across the river from me!
So, I've had to go the mail order or internet route, but I do business with brick and mortar, established shops and stores. WholeSale Trains, Trainworld to name two are family owned stores , and authorized BMann dealers, as is The Favorite Spot. There are many, many guys out there specializing in On30 product....try a Google search, you will be pleasantly suprised.
There are even a few On30 modelers who have taken it upon themselves to open CyberShops so we can get our stuff, so to speak ;D. My hats off to them all.

Well I've vented enough, but want to reiterate, we are modelers in a very specialized niche, and sometimes have to search to fill our needs.

Regards,

Howard

How true it is. It must be interesting being across from the Bmann shop. I'd thought they would have a option to by from them locally? Even a tour with free samples would be an idea  watcha think?! ;D
Just a thought...  :D
Any way we are on the same wave length on the subject of purchasing. ;)

I just left Star Hobby in Annapolis, MD.  They have two "Dismal Swamps" on display for $20.00 each and claim to have more in the "backroom".  This is a family owned LHS that normally has a hugh array of On30 equipment IN STOCK for very good prices.  A good place to look for scarce items.
Cheers, OldStone

to all you folks supporting your LHS, I would love to support my LHS if I only had one!  The nearest town to where I live is Sierra Vista, AZ & they don't have a single hobby shop!   The nearest hobby shops are in Tucson 85 miles away, they are universally in HO, almost no on30.
The nearest narrow gauge shop is Coronado in Phoenix, almost 200 miles away!

Almost everything I buy, RR wise, I have to order on line.  Oh lord do I get tired of paying for shipping!

Cheers,

Rich
