Title: Uh-oh.
Post by: BaltoOhioRRfan on October 29, 2007, 05:12:59 PM
My Athearn Genisis F3 B Unit is smoking, Literly. Seems to run fine but it smokes more then an engine with a smoke unit and gives off a bad smell.  No idea whats going on. anyone have a clue?

I would guess that as soon as all the magic smoke gets out, it will stop working.

Is this DCC or DC? Sound or not?

Take the shall off and I think you will find that you need to replace it.

replace the motor.  with the shell off you can see where the smoke is coming from.  If it is the motor I don't see how it ran this long.  It could be that you have a hot wire that is burning plastic.

yeah, maybe you need to clean something. I know i have some Ancient Metroliner EMU cars, and when i ran them, the motor had EXTREME sparks, and was smoking. then again, Genesis is new, so maybe its not that old to be that bad.  Have you tried cleaning and fixing up the motor?

ran it again, still smoked. motor sounds fine. shell didn't feel hot. I'll open it up tonight when i get home and run it again. my fear is that the bored might be burning up.

Only if the board isn't bored!  Might be the  reason it is smoking!    ;D

Any chance there is oil or grease on the motor or contacts?
