On30 / Re: A Q about 4-6-0 for Bachmann

Okay I realize that it is done and alouthough I am not happy I am not complanning just wondering why did you do the 4-6-0 styled for ET&WNC which is only one road name when if you had changed a few details it would have worked for SPNG and RGS.

For some reason, after the initial run of cars (box car, short caboose, etc.) Bachmann has mostly lost interest in western prototype narrow gauge equipment for On30.  I know the vast majority of On30 modelers are freelance modelers interested in making small equipment running on backwoods shorter-than-short lines, but there must be some interest in it as "poor man's narrow gauge", as MMI has very agressive plans for Colorado narrow gauge in On30, Broadway Limited has dabbled with a few engines, and San Juan Car Shops is making all their kits available with On30 wheelsets.  They even cranked up an RTR line.

Bachmann is making some dandy western equipment in Fn3 (1:20.3) scale, though.  I guess I just need a little more space...

Hopefully, On30 will become popular enough that Bachmann can start a couple different lines, like the Big Hauler and 1:20.3 Fn3 lines in large scale.  That way there will be plenty of equipment available for the pizza box layout crowd and those of us to lazy to lay our own On3 track.  :)

No, unfortunately, I think most On30 modelers prefer equipment to pull 10 foot boxcars around 15 inch radius curves.

I'm holding out for a sub-$200 (street price) On30 K27/K28 from Bachmann, but I doubt we ever get one.

Great stuff!

Will the next run of Moguls have the new pilot already installed?

HO / Re: DCC Chuff rate for HO 3 truck Shay

Don't have the info you need, but I do have a quick question about the soundtraxx shay decoder itself.  Is your volume very faint?  I installed one for a club member, and can't get any appreciable volume out of the thing.

its not bad, but people including me who don't have the money for the sound or just don't want it.

drhone. I did answer your question. its enough to make me want to go sound but it'll drive me crazy after a while.

Good to hear, do you know what limitations the Bachmann sound decoder has in relation to the regular sound chip? Also anyone know what limitations the Bachmann DCC decoder? There has been some references to some users taking out the Bachmann decoders and replacing them due to their limitations.

The Bachmann DCC "On Board" decoder is a basic, 28 speed step decoder with simple light control.  The sound decoders in the Spectrum steam engines, however, are Soundtraxx Tsunami decoders, and are the best on the market.

Athearn has been catching a lot of grief by using MRC sound decoders.  While I have no problem with the sound from their diesel decoders (the Athearn MP15's sound great to me), their steam decoder is lacking.  Plus, some people have had problems with programming the MRC decoders.

I was hoping for a more traditional 4-4-0 with large drivers.  It'll be interesting to see what the kitbashers do with this one though.

On30 / Re: On30 layout survey
July 28, 2007, 04:08:27 PM
Layout is currently in the planning stages

1. It will be a Colorado narrow gauge style layout with mining/logging operations, although a New England seaport terminal is very tempting.

2 The buildings will be mostly laser kits with some scratch building as needed.

3. The time period will be an undefined early 20th century setting in a vaguely defined location.  Town names will either be pulled randomly from a map of the area, or made up based on other typical town names.  There will be Model A's, some wagons, and mostly wood buildings.  No diesels or oil fired locos.  There will probably be some woodburners, even though that's a stretch for the early 20th century.  I'm going more for a general feel than a prototype.

4. It's going to be a shelf based layout, hopefully with continuous running.  The 26 inch minimum radius of the MMI K27 is putting me off a little bit, but I'll figure something out.
