Great to see the picures of the new Lyn posted on Facebook.

Do we know any more about how the DCC capability will be provided? Socket or the older style DCC ready?

Gentlemen, you have the Annie "fart"problem.

What is happening is the sound drum contacts (the strips on the drum) have screws at the ends holding the strips to the plastic drum. The Mk. IV and later 4-6-0 the axle bushings are LARGE, and the screwheads occasionally contact the bushing, which is one side of track power.. As the axle moves from side to side, the gap closes and you get, the "fart" effect.

The cure is to put a nylon washer between the back of the drive wheel and the brass bushing. The proper way to do this is by removing the wheels, but I've been successful on may occasions by just cutting one side of the washer and "persuading" it over the axle with some needle nose pliers.

I believe the original problem and cure was posted on the Phoenix Sound web site, but I don't know if it's still there.

I just checked and it's here and even includes picture of the process I just described and the size of the washer needed.

Good Luck and welcome to fart free railroading

No problem Udo. I should have given the 2-4-2T designation to be clearer.

I too have converted an Indy to DCC/Sound, but I took the cheaper route using an MRC 1819 decoder. I have used  the Loksound XL, but I can't get over using a decoder that costs twice the value of the engine. The Loksound is the most powerful decoder I've ever used and I've even modified sound files for other locos, but the MRC has proven to be simple and effective on the small engines.

Large / Lyn - DCC Ready?

So glad to see the Lyn returning to the catalog. It was my first LS engine, but due to numerous problems I sold it on but now look forward to a Mk II with those issues addressed. Thanks.

Do we know yet if it will have the "super socket"  for DCC or the earlier DCC ready kind of setup?

Also, will there be a chuff sensor and if so, mechanical or optical?

Thanks again, Peter.

That's a big question. What model are you referring to and do you simply want to replace a broken Bachmann unit with another Bachmann unit or upgrade to something more effective?

I would have thought the 3 truck Shay had the same Bachmann board in the tender as the 2 truck, and that does support DCC hookup fairly easily. I have the 3 truck with DCC/sound from the factory, but I've never opened it up to see what PC board is has.

I think you would get an answer if you post the same question on mylargescale.com.

I think the last version (has smoke unit) worked ok but was a very weak puller and I did I did end up selling mine.

The similar Indy 2-6-0 has much better detail and the drive train problem is fixed on that one. However, it was never made with UP markings.

Jack, the Aristo units put out a considerable amount of smoke and run for 20+ minutes before going dry without any adverse effects. The ease of install depends on the loco.

I'm very familiar with the innards of the Annie, but I won't get around to doing that install until next fall now that outside work can occur in my part of the USA. There's plenty of room in the Annie, but you would need to fabricate a support inside the boiler to support the unit.

It's also useful for moving the loc when it's partly disassembled. I just eliminated it to install an Aristo smoke unit. That's a tight fit and will be more effective than the post ever was in preventing "boiler crush".

This site might help you. They show a figure 8 with a 90 degree cross and a lot of other fun features.  May give you ideas for something a little more complex.

I would think there some easy money to be made by Bachmann by releasing some of the legacy rolling stock with new road numbers and I too would be interested in an Annie with the Flying Letters (especially if it included the DCC socket!)

A caboose here, a boxcar there, it all adds up.

You might be able to get away with an HO decoder in the smallest o G scale locomotives if you run short trains, but why bother?

There are plenty of reasonable prices alternatives. One of my favorites is the MRC 1819 which has 5 amp capacity, a wide selection of steam effects and can be had for about $70. If you want to retain the chuff sync then I would recommend the QSI Magnum. more expensive but you get what you pay for.

Good luck

Well, it was the Prodigy, but it was also the user.

I used a virtual  throttle thru Decoder Pro to prove that the decoder was good and then it occurred to me that there was something I'd read about old style (command station based) consists. So I deleted the consist in the Prodigy and #4 was working.

The only time I'd ever used a consist was with two LGB Moguls which has MTS decoder which don't support decoder based conssiting. Somehow in setting up that consist, #4 had got involved.

Problem solved. Thanks for all the ideas and support.
