On30 / Re: 2-6-0 Prototype?
September 09, 2011, 06:10:45 PM
I believe the down pipe helped to make sure the embers were placed near the track to prevent fires. Very unique solution and I think the only road that used these.

Also I think the On30 2 6 0 is slightly different than the C&S Moguls. The position of the steam dome, whistle, and bell are slightly different.

It is close enough for me as I use it as is for my C&S models in On 30.

HO / Re: Anyone know where I can get Mantua info?

Question for the group.

I have one of these older 0 6 0 Big Six locomotives and have condsidered converting it to DCC.

I am tempted to use the old motor as it still works well but isolating it from the frame seems like it will be very difficult.

The screw holding the motor in place makes a good electrical path from loco frame to motor frame.

I have some ideas to try an isolate with a non conductive washer under the head of the screw and tape under the motor but not sure how well that will stay in place?

Any suggestions or is the best method use the Yard bird motor?

Thanks and hope this helps BlueFox getting  his 0 6 0 running better.

I am not an expert but did do one 2 6 0 and one 0 4 2 DCC install. These are not the easiest DCC installs to start on but if you take your time and study up it you should be able to handle them.

The website below really helped me on the 2 6 0 install. It is a little tricky taking it apart and depending on the decoder you select you might have to modify the frame.

I would recomend you do the 2 6 0 first as there is more room to work on it and it is a little easier than the porter.

The site below really helped me with my 0 4 2 porter. I think the 0 4 0 is similar just even less room.

Hope this helps and Best of luck

HO / Re: Engine Repair Shop
August 02, 2011, 09:14:28 PM
Thanks Jim and Jward for the great info on Engine shops.

Regarding the crane, I think I am going extend the main supports out to the walls. I am going to use some truss from a bridge kit for the supports. Not the stock supports. Also it won't go outside the main doors as you pointed out not enough room with turntable right there.

It is very close to the ceiling and in the real world that would make it difficult to lift because you can't get it high enough to clear things.

I really like the idea of moving the boiler or shell over to a flat car. That will make a really interesting load. Finally a use for those old engine shells!

Lastly on the pit, I actually did add a small one as you can see from this latest photo. Not large enough for much work but at least its there.

HO / Engine Repair Shop
July 31, 2011, 03:28:06 PM
Have not posted in awhile as I have been working on a repair shop for my locomotives.

http://s902.photobucket.com/albums/ac226/nmwtrr/Engine%20Repair%20shop/

I am sure others have built some really awesome engine shops, engine houses, and round houses.

I am trying to figure out how to add a Walthers overhead traveling crane.

Any one else want to share photos and help us all get ideas?

Thanks

HO / Re: Anyone know how to make custom decals?
May 07, 2011, 09:53:54 PM

Here are two options where you create the graphic on the computer and then print it out on this paper using your normal printer.

I have had good luck with HobbyCal, sometimes they don't stick well but just a little white glue under helps.

Also I have used Vitacal. It requires a coating after you print it.

Here is an example:

Interesting I did not know that the switch machines would work on DC.

As always this forum is very educational.

EARIC,

Question: Are you referring to the track, switch machine or selector?

Atlas makes all of these products.

Locomotives on track normally use DC (Won't go into DCC here).

The switch machine which moves the postion of the track turnout uses AC.

The selector or other type of device that you use to control how electricity flows can be used either on AC or DC.

I used the term selector. Atlas makes several products that are used to control the flow of electricity. Selector is one of them.

Hope this helps.

Jonathon,

Great project  :)

All of the detailed photos and info will be a great resource to others installing sound decoders.

HO / Re: E-Z Command Control Center Acting Strange

GRZ

I had a question as a user of the EZ command. Which controller do you use? I was curious if it was the Dynamis controller or EZ command?

Occassionally I have one loco that also does not respond to my EZ command. this past winter when it was cold it reallyacted up since it has warmed up now though it behaves.  I think in my case it is a bad solder joint but not sure.

Riff,

Not sure but your problem sounds like it is more controller related if all of your engines are not responding. Do you have a hobby shop or DCC friend nearby? If so they may be able to help you confirm your engines are responding to DCC. Also confirm what is each ones program address.

Mr. Bear

First of all I had not seen this post before so was amazed at your craftsmanship!

Second I have one question regarding your snow plow. I have the same kit sitting in my to do box.

Are you planning to power the rotary blades?  If so what method/ motor/ bearing arrangement are you planning to use?

Lastly good luck on the track with the awesome dragster.

This might have been the response you were looking for on the 2-6-0 topic. In case the link below does not work you can search on 2-6-0.

Noit sure if the reference links in the post work any more, though.
