On30 / Re: 1840's or 1850's-era On30s?

CDickens -

Keep in mind the Dickens Village structures represent Victorian England, not the US.  I'm thinking about bashing something from Bachmann On30 to make it look more English, but that might be beyond my ability.  Also, the Victorian era lasted until about 1890, so trains of that era would still fit with the structures and the story, if you ignore the date it was written.

As I'm sure you know, the D56 "Dickens Village" structures are built to a slightly smaller scale than the other lines, although "scale" is somewhat of a misnomer because they are more like caricatures than scale models.  Regardless, I like them.

After some experimentation, I decided that the DV line was closest to S scale, and for the other lines On30 is about as perfect as one can get.  Sn42 would probably be best for DV, but there is very little available.

So, On30 is what I'll use with my DV, hopefully with a little bashing to make it look more English.

Good luck!

The Dunkirk Class B is my favorite engine of all time.  I would pay thousands, well maybe hundreds, for one of those.

So if the whole world has changed from On21/2 to On30, then why do these two magazines do this? there has to be a motive.

Royce

IMO its probably just stubbornness..
they have been calling it On2 1/2 for so long, they simply have to keep calling it that just to "save face"..
if they started calling it On30, like the other 99.9% of the hobby, they would look like they "lost the argument" or something I guess..thats the only rational explanation I can think of..because otherwise it makes no sense whatsoever..

Scot

Exactly.

Does anyone know of a good ballast, or product that is great for making a snow like ballast? I'm told baking soda is not the best thing to use. MY layout is part winder/fall, and will have some snowy areas.

Dusten -

For snow, I just use regular ballast and paint or dry brush a little very white acrylic paint on top.  Works fine.

Of course if you want to change to some else in autumn, you could paint it back to it's original color.

For me, this is better than trying to put anything fluffy beneath the rails so I won't clog the engine mechanisms.

OTOH, if you want fluffy, several people have told me that baking soda works far better than its reputation.  Many criticize it because they think it's corrosive, but apparently that's not true.  I haven't tried it, but one thing I want to avoid at all cost is something fluffy that blows around every time a train passes or someone walks past the layout.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

I have one of the little Diesels, I built a little MOV car to house a TSU1000 diesel decoder, the car is always attached, it sounds great. though the unchanging drone of the diesel gets to be a little much at times, its not relaxing like the steam chuff is to me, so I use the manual notching feature to set it to idle while its running around.

Not that it matters, but in case you're interested, they aren't diesels, they have gasoline engines.

Keep in mind that wood burns far more readily than styrofoam, so try not to use any wood on your layout.

Hello everyone. This is my first post here. I have a question to ask anyone who might have knowledge about the Spectrum, On30 Bumble Bee. My son gifted me with one this Christmas and when I opened the box I was surprised to find that the loco was very small. In fact it's a tad smaller than my HO, SP diesel loco and it couples right up with all my HO rolling stock (Kadee couplers). The box is MARKED On30 but I am having my doubts.

Can anyone supply me with actual, physical dim insions of this loco or tell me where I might find the information? THANKS!

A few points:  99% of all RTR On30 equipment will couple perfectly with Kaydees at HO height.  That's intentional, although it's not perfectly to scale.

I just measured my Bachmann On30 2-6-0 Mogul at 11.75 inches in length.  That's from the end of the rear tender coupler to the front of the pilot.  Just a hand held rule measurement, but accurate within 1/8" or so.

The prototypes for these model were much smaller than the standard gauge equivalent.  In other words,  A 1:1 narrow gauge Mogul was scaled down in almost all aspects from a standard gauge Mogul, and thus the model is too.

Dusten, that looks terrific!  How did you paint (or whatever) the stripes around the window and door frames?

Thanks, Mr. B.  But are we talking about the same loco?  The On30 Davenport with DCC has been on the market for several years.

Just a note -

O Scale is 1/4" = 1 foot (or 1:48) in the US.  In England, O scale is 1:43.5, and in Europe it is 1:45.

Maybe it's a cover plate for the forthcoming decoder chip.   ;)
