When I plug in the speed controller the red light comes on but slowly becomes dim until it goes out. the train never runs.

I am having the same problem.  I came on this discussion board to see if anyone can help.  We just bought the train within the last 30 days.  It's the Thunderbolt.  The light comes on but when I reverse the direction of the controller, the red light goes out.  The train does not run.

Can anyone help?

Check the power connections. Is the track wiring connected to the DC terminals like they should be? Connecting them to the AC terminals is a common mistake that can ruin your locomotive if done too many times.

Conrail is correct: the most common problem is using the AC instead of DC terminals. Also, check for short circuits- the video will show you how.
Good luck!
