I am considering purchasing the item #11803 (DRG&W EMD-FT-B unit) in order to convert it to DCC.  I know that this is a DC only unit.

I already have the DCC-EQUIPPED DRG&W EMD-FT-A unit).

My questions are: (1) is the EMD-FT-B unit DCC-READY?  (2) If so, what Bachmann decoder should I use to convert it to DCC?

Thank you for the information, I have visited the Kadee Site and found the instructions and parts that I need to get.

You have been very helpful.  Thanks again.

Answer:

22" radius curved track (making a half-circle of 44") and 18" radius curved track (making a half-circle of 36").  This is over a layout that covers 2 4'x8' pieces of plywood in an L-shape.  If you can visualize it, there are 2 "L's" within each other (plus switches between tracks).  The outer "L" uses 22" radius curved track and the inner "L" uses 18" curved track).

Can magnetic couplers be used with passenger cars built by International Hobby Corporation?  I believe that they are also called "knuckle couplers."

I noticed that the couplers with the IHC cars are similar to the old Ahearn style couplers, but they have a very long neck to allow for clearance on turns.  I have several Bachman and Ahearn diesel locomotives (F-3 or F-7 A and AB units that I put Bachman magnetic couplers on) with the magnetic couplers.  Can the couplers on the IHC passenger cars be replaced and with what?  Or do I have to go back to the old Ahearn couplers and put them on the Bachman and Ahearn diesel locomotives?

Thank you for your response.

1.  Which DCC decoders work with Ahearn diesel locomotives?    I have several that I want to convert to DCC compatibility.

2.  Are there any DCC decoders that can be installed in Ahearn diesel locomotives that do not involve soldering?

3.  Is this something that I can do myself or should I have it done by the local hobby shop service department?

They are going to make an "L" shape (one leg will be 4'x12' and the other leg will be 4'x8').

This is not for a club...it is for me.

General Discussion / DCC and Switching Tracks

I am fixing to build a new RR layout (which will cover two 4'x8') particle board tops.  I have generally decided on the track design and it will feature several switches between tracks (probably 10-14).  The locomotives (all diesel) are DCC-compatible.  I plan to run anywhere between 2-4 trains at the same time.

Question #1:  Are there any simple and decent publications on how to install RR switches?  Do they need to be powered from a seperate power source?  How do I control them?

(Note: If and when you respond, assume that I am a total rookie and tell me what I need).

Question #2:  Do RR switches work with DCC?  If they do work with DCC, how do they work and how do you make the connections?

I am in need of some help from someone who knows what they are doing.  Thank you.
