There are often 2 on the cab roof of the F40 on each side of the top of the cab that alternately flash...
If you've ever been near a railroad line in the dark out in the country, the strobe let's you know that a train is approaching. You can see the strobe a long distance. I suppose it is visible during the day - don't know, haven't seen one.
well thanx ... now i know 8) ;D
As far as I know, the strobes on the Bachmann F40 a a figment of some Bachmann designer's imagination. I could be wrong, but I've never heard of any Amtrak Locomotive having strobes.

Look at old pictures, and you see the two strobelights on the roof of the F40PH :)

Both of these have strobes.

Amtrak used strobes back in the early days - I haven't been near an Amtrak mainline in 10 years so I don't know if they still use them.
On the other hand, their newer P42's do not.

Nor do their West-Coast P59PHI's.

I guess Amtrak decided the strobes were unneccessary. It makes no sense to me.
Well, at least now you know the model isn't based on "a figment of some Bachmann designer's imagination." The headlights flash alternately on the modern locomotives; maybe that's why strobes aren't implemented any longer.
