On30 / Re: sound in ON30 climax

Yes, looking forward to hearing these in person, though something tells me there is not going to be a cost savings using these over tsunami.

QSI is coming out with a new line that are supposed to sound better than the Tsunami AND can be downloaded to through a computer.  Not sure if they will offer a mini.  Their standard appears to be the same size as the normal Tsunami.  Check out the QSI into at    www.tonystrains.com.

On30 / sound in ON30 climax
April 29, 2008, 01:03:18 PM
Want to put sound in my On30 climax, everything else I have has a tsunami
decoder in it, but I am willing to try something new. Is there anything by another manufacturer that you have used, that fits and sounds as good as a tsunami? I was thinking perhaps Loksound or maybe a MRC 1637 or 1639? Love tsunami, but the cost is killing me after 10 engines.

Errr, MMI does not make a C-16, and none of their engines come equipped with sound, so whose engine do you have?

I would rather have a nicely detailed engine that sound can be added later than have a engine with cast on details with a good sound system.
I have a MMI C-16 that was a lot of work to remove those ugly non prototype flange dome and cast on detail...I will never do that again.

sound is nice but it gets to be noise after time. ???

Open sided cars are already available, no need to wish for such a thing, they are produced by Grizzly mountain engineering.

I would second Peter's recommendation for a Tsunami medium steam in the 2-8-0, sounds awesome in mine with the three chime whistle. Why digitrax doesn't offer the soundbug with motor control included is beyond me...I guess it is only suitable as a retrofit for existing decoders, but I would rather have one decoder taking up space in my carbody, not two.

I used a tsunami medium steam on my 2-8-0, as I was not using the cheap bachmann decoder for any further purpose, I cut off the 8 pin plug, attached the leads from the tsunami decoder, soldered and shrink wrapped the joints and plugged her in. Runs like a top now. Was actually able to set up the tsunami to give exactly 4 exhaust beats per driver revolution on the auto chuff, so the cam wasn't even necessary. The speaker came from Grizzly mountain engineering, and is siliconed in place. there are no baffles or enclosures, the tender is not even sealed, the sound is amazing. The Decoder sits up in the oil bunker on mine. I didn't follow Harold Minkwitz' how to article, as everything operated as intended without any further modifications.

On30 / Re: San Juan Car Company and R-T-R On30

Yes, San Juan cars are scale models of Colorado narrow gauge prototypes. Listening to some, it almost would sound that these models are oversized, out of scale behemoths. No, they will not go around 12" radius curves, and yes they will dwarf a porter, but proportionally they look great behind the bachmann 2-8-0 and are a proper match for all the new MMI engines. Quit dumping on the San Juan offerings, they are what they are, scale representations of the prototypes.

Now we finally get something that is was needed in On30 scale.
Oh what will the future bring ?

Cheers,    TOF

Maybe an indexed turntable that will hold an MMI engine?? :o

On30 / Re: Can we have new tank cars in On30?

I guess Bachmann is off the hook now that San Juan has announced production of a Gramps Tank car with all new tooling. That will give Bachmann more time to spend on making us a really nice heisler!!!

I guess the beauty of rtr is that they don't sit on the shelves for years until magically rediscovered and then put away again just as quickly. Just imagine if Bachmann did these Gramps cars as an ON30 model that was easily convertible to On3, sold for $30.00 each, and were already painted and lettered. I'd have that 8 car train running in no time!

On30 / Re: IF YOU WERE BACHMANN'S CFO

I would use my existing drawings to save money and produce the gramps tank car in On30, also the 3 cylinder shay and the heisler. I think if new drawings were in order, I would do a ten wheeler like RGS 20.

Sure, I'll go for a two or three truck shay, 28 tons or larger, and for sure a heisler of the same size!

proportionally everything looks much better now, problem is that the cab is likely only 4' tall now!
