Title: 2-8-0 Large scale consolidation
Post by: john chumbley on October 25, 2010, 01:45:09 PM
My Bachmann 2-8-0 would not run, although I could hear the motor turning over . I rang Bachmann in England and ordered a new gear box.

The problem is that the new gearbox has a lot of play in it. To get it to run ok I have to put a thin piece of card between the gearbox and the plate that it butts up against. the z shaped piece of metal that holds the gearbox in place doesnot hold it tight enough.

Can someone give me some advice on what's wrong?

On mine the gear box was fine, it was the drive gear on the axle that had a crack.  If you have removed the gear box at one time to check, make sure that you line up the two seals/bearings with the gear box or it won't hold in place.  Those are on each side of the gear on the axle.
