General Discussion / Can Marklin controller be used...
Last post by Skurtela - April 24, 2024, 12:16:52 AM
Noob here. Can a Marklin power controller be used to power EZ track? I believe I have Marklin locomotives. The power controller is Marklin 6201. I see the power connection might require a different wiring. HO scale trains.

At last, Bachmann has Rebecca's painted sample ready, for real this time. In a couple more weeks, we'll get to see HO Scale Rebecca, fully painted, in her entirety. That will be the big reveal for the May Thomas Tuesday. Hopefully N Scale Gordon in the package as well.

I am a lot more impressed with how Sir Topham Hatt's car is coming along so far personally.  I appreciate how Bachmann was willing to give updates on that once they added wheels to the car.  I'm looking forward to adding this to my layout once the figure packs arrive.

Hope we hear an update on N scale Gordon in the package/shipment soon too.

Bachmann's Facebook has a teaser for Rebecca's painted sample once more, now proclaiming it will be revealed in full during the "Thomas Tuesday" in two weeks... It looks very nicely painted and detailed... Definitely interested in seeing the full thing...

HO / Re: Sound Decoders
Last post by wjstix - April 23, 2024, 02:10:23 PM
Converting an old (pre-DCC era) engine to sound is, in my experience, much harder than just converting it to DCC. You have to get the decoder installed and find room for a speaker and it's enclosure. In some cases, I've just given up and bought a new version of the engine and swapped body shells...although in some cases, the new bodies of the diesels are much better detailed than the old ones.

Anyway, non-sound DCC decoders aren't that pricey compared to sound decoders, for the cost of one sound decoder you could buy like 3 non-sound ones to convert your old DC engines with. Maybe look into ones with some version of "keep alive" or "power pack" if the old engines - like many old steam engines - don't pick up power all that well.

HO / Re: Speed Matching
Last post by wjstix - April 22, 2024, 05:31:07 PM
Generally, an engine will start more smoothly with CV2 at zero. If you're using 128 speed steps and set CV2 at 20, when you move the throttle to speed step 1 the engine it will jump from 0 to speed step 20. I usually only use CV2 if I have two engines I want to speed match, and one is a little more sluggish getting started.

You may find adjusting CV66 (Forward Trim) and CV 95 (Reverse Trim) up or down from the default 128 may make the engine run slower or faster.

@trainman203 - CV2 is the start voltage...determining the motor speed at step 1
I have never seen any factory or installed decoder with a default CV2 setting of 0
In fact...most mfgr's recommend anywhere from 2 to 26 for CV2 depending on the typical use of the loco
I already have CV3 and CV4 set where I want them tyvm

@jward - Yes they are DCC OnBoard units...I kinda suspected they may not be adjustable
They are not perfectly matched but very close

Quote from: JonJet on April 21, 2024, 07:11:31 AMI have 50+ N-scale loco's...and 5 HO...

All the HO models are Bachmann GP40's and SD40-2's...but I cannot seem to get anywhere using CV 2/5/6 to speed match

I have CV2 at 10 - CV5 at 255

The AccutrackII shows the same whether CV6 is 50 or 150

Am I missing something???

Are these the DCC OnBoard units that came with the factory decoders? If so they may not support CV5 or CV6. This makes speed matching impossible. If this is important to you, you'll need to replace the original decoder with an aftermarket one like the NCE Bach-DSL which is a drop in replacement. I am not sure why the original decoders do not support these very important CVs.
