HO / cantilevered abutment
January 14, 2016, 02:46:59 PM
due to my screwy layout I have a bridge coming to an abutment over another lower level track.
Is there such a thing as a "cantilevered" abutment?
thanks

HO / more bridging questions
January 08, 2016, 11:49:35 AM
I am using bachmann code 100 flex track and am building a Micro Engineering Tall Steel Viaduct bridge.
All the instructions refer to M.E. code 83 flex track.
Can i just use my code 100 flextrack for the bridge and then use code 70 for the guard rails?
or can I (should I) mix the code 100 and code 83(for the bridge)?
should the guard rails extend beyond the bridge onto the abutment?
thanks

HO / ribbed back wheels vs smooth back wheels
December 31, 2015, 09:41:08 AM
what is the purpose of the ribbed back wheels vs smooth back wheels?
are they just for emulating "real - life" railroad wheels?

HO / guard timbers and guard rails for flex track
December 27, 2015, 12:49:04 PM
I am assembling a Micro Engineering "Tall Steel Viaduct" bridge and had planned on using Bachmann flex track I had bought with it.
However the instructions call for installing guard timbers over the ties and a guard rail inside of the "normal" rails plus "barrel platforms".
The guard timbers, guard rails and barrel platforms are supplied with code 83 Micro Engineering Flex track.
Anyone know if I can either buy this pieces elsewhere for my Bachmann Flex track or do with them for my bridge?
thanks

HO / different versions of 80 ton shay
December 27, 2015, 08:48:53 AM
I see 80 ton shays available on eBay.
some say "wooden cab" others "steel cab".
are these emulating different real life shay versions? is this just a matter of taste? or is one more "desirable" than the other?
thanks

HO / 8 pin connector with PCB
December 24, 2015, 09:36:27 AM
I bought a birney streetcar that comes with a 8 pin connector that has a pcb 'embedded" into the connector.
I am trying to solder a sound decoder to the "dummy connector"(that also has the pcb).
I may have damaged the connector with my brutal soldering.
replacement 8 pin connectors I see available online do not have the pcb.
my question is, what is the pcb for and is it needed?
thanks

HO / 70 ton climax gears
December 22, 2015, 05:43:49 AM
I just received my first geared locomotive! And it climbs inclines like a champ!
Should I be concerned about the plastic gears? Did the 70 ton climax ever ship with metal gears?
I can't tell if the gears are metal using a magnet doesn't work as the gears are very small and the is surrounded by other metal parts (ironic!)
I am just if I should go ahead and order the metal gears.
thanks

HO / considering 70 ton climax
December 19, 2015, 10:44:27 AM
I am looking at buying a 70 ton climax.
What are the opinions of getting one with "DCC Sound on board" vs getting one without and installing a Soundtrax decoder? would the sound be better one way or the other?
thanks

HO / ole track difficulties
December 13, 2015, 03:00:34 PM
so my first adventure with flex track is not going well.
I plan on mixing flex track with easy track.
I have one section with approx 1/4 of a 22 inch curve into 18 inch straight into 1/2 a 22 inch curve.
I had decided to solder the lengths of flex track need for the full section (90 inches)
But when I tried to curve the track the rail popped away from the ties.
What are the proper and easy steps to lay down flex track?
Should I just work with the 36 inch sections?
thanks

HO / number of transformers and controllers
December 08, 2015, 05:45:09 AM
if I am planning a layout with 2 - 3 separate loops and one end to end auto reversing; I assume I would need separate transformers for power and separate controllers.
do most of you with larger layouts use multiple transformers and controllers?
thanks
