Title: Recommended DCC decoder for Porter?
Post by: Cypress Hills on December 26, 2010, 12:54:53 PM
Mr. Bachmann can you suggest a suitable DCC decoder for the Porter?

how much amperage is enough for the Porter?

I put a tsunami tsu1000 light steam in mine, sounds great works great pulles like a mule. Using the cam to activate the chuff along with load sensing of the tsunami gives it a great sound

Garden Railways review had the following statement:

" In tests, the engine starting moving at .2V, .2 amps, with sustained running at .4V, 2 amps. Full slip occurred at 15V, .9 amps. "

so a 1 amp decoder like the Tsunami or Loksound Select should be fine in this loco.

Peter:

I think you left out a decimal point in the sustained running parameters:

Quote<snip> sustained running at .4V, 2 amps <snip>

--should probably be--

" sustained running at .4V, .2 amps "

Be careful to select a decoder rated for typical Large Scale voltages (27 volts DCC rating is the preferred rating)

To overcome the short wheelbase electrical problems I use a Lenz Gold Maxi decoder with a internal power module.
