HO / Track cleaning
September 01, 2011, 01:49:17 PM
I read instructions on this board about track cleaning. They call for rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth..............Can someone give me an example of a lint free cloth?
I'm a has-been woodworker and the lint free cloth I picture is called a tack cloth. It's coated with a waxy element to pick up sawdust. I doubt that's what anyone would recommend for cleaning model railroad track.
    Thanks again,

HO / Re: EZ track turnout control (correction)
July 30, 2011, 07:25:37 PM
Well as it turns out, I found another green cable, hooked it up and I'm back in business. Sorta scary to me why I had an extra cable though since I'm very new to this hobby and don't have any extra turnouts laying around. :-\
Anyway, thanks a lot guys !!

HO / EZ track turnout control (correction)
July 18, 2011, 07:17:21 PM
Does anyone know if it's possible to buy just the DC controller for the EZ track turnouts?
One of mine died. Power is going thru it to the next controller, but not out to the turnout it's suppose to be controlling.
   Thanks,
   Ted
Well, as it turns out now, when I connect that turnout to a different controller, it still doesn't work. And if I connect another turnout to that controller it works fine. So my problem is with the turnout it's self, not the controller. Sorry I gave you half-a--ed information. Should have finished testing before I posted.
Thanks again Kevin & Joe.

It would be like you driving around town in your car with a cement truck welded to your front bumper,

  Hey Jim,
Many is the day I wished for a cement truck option, while driving around Detroit.

What RR is it, a few railroads ran them in the opposite direction.
Thanks for all the info. Don't guess it makes much of a difference now, but mine is Union Pacific. I'll probably go with cab forward.

I've got a GP-40 and can't figure out if the cab should be forward or aft. Performance wise it doesn't seem to make any difference. Just wondering which is correct.
    Thanks,

HO / Re: Plastic or metal wheels ???
June 20, 2011, 01:32:16 PM

Hey ACY, Thanks for your input. My apologies!! It's been a while since I removed the pilot and trailing wheels from that locomotive, (they were derailing even if the drive wheels didn't). It's the Overland Express, and it's a 4-8-4, not a 2-8-2.
The venting portion of my original post was only to complain about the inferior quality and then the lack of companionship of products included together in the same set.
I realize it was a cheap set, but I have a feeling that a lot of beginners start out with cheap sets. I just have to wonder how many of those cheap sets end up discouraging how many beginners?
I appreciate this board, and all the fantastic people who post answers to our problems. For me this board is the difference between having a model railroad or something else.
    Thanks again,
    Ted

HO / Plastic or metal wheels ???
June 20, 2011, 08:38:04 AM
What are the pros and cons of plastic and/or metal wheel sets. If I change over from plastic to metal is it OK to just replace the wheel sets or should the entire trucks be changed out?
I'm having a problem now with wheel sets falling out of the trucks.
This after trouble with couplers failing, the task of adjusting turnouts and the fact that Bachmann sent this beginner a train set that included a 2-8-2 locomotive with EZ track and 18" radius curves it doesn't like.
I know, I know, "Welcome to the hobby". Just felt like venting a little this morning and I knew you guys would understand.  :)

I'm not usually one to butt into others people's go-rounds, but gotta say I agree with Donaldon here. I always appreciate the info I get from this board but it may take me a few days to get back to it and recognize the helpers.
Thanks again to all who help. It's probably more appreciated than it may appear.

HO / Re: tank car weight
May 23, 2011, 03:51:43 PM
Just finished correcting the weight on my tank car. I had been using lead fishing sinkers to add weight. But ran out and didn't have enough pennies in the house to do the job. Well it finally dawned on me that I have coffee cans full of nuts and bolts found and salvaged from numerous places.  Success!!  ;D And even cheaper than pennies. I love it when a plan comes together.

Good one guys !  I've got the same situation and didn't want to get too aggressive when trying to get the tank off. Wasn't sure if it would even come off or what I'd find. Thanks for the pics JWARD.
I've been using hot melt glue to secure weights in place. Anybody see a problem with that?

HO / Re: Beginning scenery ?
May 01, 2011, 08:04:02 AM
Hey Jward,  having never dealt with plaster of any sort before, I was puzzled about the entire process. Had no idea of the weight or the chipping propensity. On the other hand I have dealt pulled muscles!
By posting here, my dilemma was solved. And as usual, the solution seems so simple once its explained. Instead of sitting here wondering how to get started, I can now move on.
Thanks to all for the info, and I'll check out the offering from Woodland Scenics.

HO / Beginning scenery ?
April 30, 2011, 05:31:25 PM
Trying to figure out if making scenery, (hills, mountains, a tunnel) is best done on the layout or off site then fixed to the proper location.
My concern is the possibility of the wet plaster cloth trashing my painted 1inch foamboard base during construction of scenery.
I have plenty of screen, some plaster cloth, newspaper for wadding and plenty of cardboard I can make into strips.
I'll feel a lot better about starting this project after hearing from a few experienced RR's
    As always, thanks guys!!!

General Discussion / Re: Catalog abbreviations
April 26, 2011, 04:51:59 PM
Just in case anyone's interested, I just got off the phone with Walthers. Structures in their catalogs and flyers labeled "laser" are wood. ALL OTHERS are plastic!

General Discussion / Catalog abbreviations

Is there a way to tell in the Walthers Catalog or Flyer whether structure model kits are plastic or wood?
    Thanks in advance,
