HO / Re: slow and getting slower
October 15, 2010, 07:44:29 AM
I did not mean to imply that I had used a quart of oil, in fact, I have used very little and none inside. I do not believe that friction is the issue. Friction is a "load" and will cause the motor to draw more current and generate heat but it will run cool for hours pulling 10 cars. I did try the factory default values and I'm very curious as to why the EZ runs it significantly faster than the Dynamis. The velocity changes are evenly incremental so I do not suspect a bit missing in the word. I am operating 0 to 128 and the audio increments evenly in velocity too. The sound is fast but the loco is slow. Thanks for your responses.

HO / slow and getting slower
October 14, 2010, 11:38:52 AM
I have a DCC Sound Equipped C&O® H-4 2-6-6-2 Articulated Locomotive w/Vandy VC12 Tender and it was never very fast. The E Z system was the fastest and then my Dynamis was slower but I'm still using my Dynamis and it is very slow. The sound is like it is going fast but when it is as fast as it will go my Decapod will beat it when the Decapod is set to 20% velocity. The wheels appear to turn about once every second whereas when new it was a blur to look at.
I have used the light oil on the rods etc and all seems like there is no friction. The loco does not get hot, like it was overcoming a lot of friction either.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

E-Z Command and Dynamis are entirely different.   E-Z Command (the original basic system) is a Bachmann US product while Dynamis was conceived and marketed by Bachmann UK (Euro?) later.
Bachmann US has put them together under the E-Z Command 'header' for some reason known only to them. " E-Z Command" and "Dynamis" are separately registered Tradenames.

    Eric UK
Typical of corporations in a world market - no idea what is going on where. Dynamis is sold in the USA and Bachmann have their name on it. Don't you think that the Bachmann USA web site would acknowledge tha fact that the product exists? Look at this site, the only mention is the, as good as useless, reference to the Dynamis manual. If they thought that Dynamis was a good product, wouldn't they be promoting it?

I have all DCC but I frequently have my grandson who loves the trains so I wanted to buy a Thomas engine but there is no DCC available so they lost a sale and probably many more.

Jim, as you so eloquently stated: "There are 10 kinds of people in this world - those that understand binary and those that don't." ;D

But, to acheive the same velocity at a lower voltage then I have to draw more current because the horsepower needed to operate at X feet per second is a constant. To do that I would have to change the resistance of the motor and I can't do that so I can only change the voltage and, to my knowledge, I cant do that with either EZ command devices. I say EZ Command because the Dynamis is also called EZ Command and, of course, it is made by the same people - Bachmann. It would therefore stand to reason that the cheaper EZ would be upgraded by numerous clients to Dynamis but the upgrade exposes the lack of compatibility of the 2 products from the same company.
I also think that the Dynamis is a Bachmann branded solution conceived by an independant company and the compatibility issue was never addressed by the persons involved.
A solution would be a calibration adjustment on either or both devices to allow for operational equality between different NMRA compliant cabs or for Bachmann to allow owners access to the schematics so that they could be modified. After all, modifying is what makes this a hobby and not a project. Bob, you and others probably have the necessary expertise to modify these devices for the benefit of numerous people. If Bachmann would assist us then we would not have to reverse engineer from scratch.

I have a bachmann ez command dynamis dcc controller.....my 1st engine is a dcc bachmann gp 40 diesel........i cannot control the speed or direction of the diesel and the stop button only allows the train to run intermittently........i can control the light......
Any help?????.......according to the instructions i should have been able to run engine right out of the box.......THANX BOOGS
I certainly sounds as if the loco has a drive problem. If you can control the light then you have the correct address. If there was a short then you would not be able to contol anything because the short icon would be showing. If there was no power then you would not be able to operate the light. Do you see the Short icon when the diesel stops? Do you have or have access to another loco?

HO / Station Lights with DCC
April 06, 2009, 08:42:20 AM
Info that may help some - I bought the Freght station and the Passenger station, both of which come with an incandesant lamp inside to light the interior of the building. I wanted to mount the 2 units next to a piece of 9 inch straight so I cut a hole in the side of the track and 2 holes adjacent to the tracks. I then threaded the cable through the side hole and soldered 1 cable to each of the 2 rails by poking the wire up the little holes next to the nickel rail. The DCC constant voltage lights the 2 stations without the need to run cables from a separate aux power supply. I know some people will state that this will take power from the locos but I have numerous lights running from the DCC power and the locos still have enough available current. If current ever became an issue then I would probably buy a booster before I bought an external supply because of the ease of wiring. BTW - Dynamis 2.3 Amps with 4 or 5 locos running at once with LED's in 7 pass cars, 3 cabooses, 4 lit crane cars and 2 stations.

HO / Re: EZ Command DCC Loco speed

My measurements confirm the findings: Dynamis = 13.3v at approx 6.X KHz, the EZ Command = 16.1V at approx same frequency. I have no idea why Bachmann decided to make the voltage so low on Dynamis and it's going to be tough to find out as this site and the USA customer Support have only just about acknowleged the fact that Dynamis exists. It's time to take the lid off of the Dynamis - Mr Bach man, a schematic would be useful?

HO / EZ Command DCC Loco speed
April 02, 2009, 09:06:37 AM
I have an EZ Command DCC controller and an EZ Command Dynamis controller and the same loco will operate at different speeds with each controller. The DCC 2-6-6-2 (with sound) runs faster under the basic EZ controller than it does under EZ Command Dynamis controller and, obviously, the loco has the CV's programmed the same for each test.
My test is with both controllers flat out. I do not, however, notice any difference in the chuff rate. The Dynamis shows 126/126 for velocity and the EZ is full clock on the control. I guess the thing to do is measure the voltage at the track but I do not have a dvm for the DCC reading. Has anybody got any theories or ideas as to why this is happening?

HO / Re: lighted caboose
March 27, 2009, 11:35:49 AM
I have Bachmann cabooses with the metal wheels that are isolated from one side to the other so I used the copper spring assy from the Kaydee couplers and spread the spring wings to run against the inside of the wheels on each side. The copper piece is screwed on with the truck mounting screw and the trucks aligned so that the conducting wheels are on either side. I soldered a wire onto the copper piece and drilled a hole into the box of the car approx in the middle. The wires are then mounted to an LED with an operating voltage of 14v. BTW the LED has an internal resister. The LED is glued inside the caboose for the desired effect. Use yellow or red or a white LED. I run DCC and all is well.

Dear db,
I read every post, every night. I report any issues to the appropriate person. Sometimes things take a while to change, and some things, perhaps, never will. The bad run of Decapods was addressed, and any that remain a problem will be replaced.
Have fun!

Thank you Bach-man.

Whenever I fix what I consider to be a defect, I usually post a comment here so that the Bach-man knows about the problem.

If you read my thread "Pictures and Diagrams", I reported a lot of problems with the tenders, and I'm slowly getting the issues resolved.
Bob, your intensions are good but there is very little evidence to suggest that Bachmann industries even monitors this forum. I too had the same issue with my new Decapod but it is obvious that these products are not even tested before leaving the factory and even if you register your new purchase, nobody gets back to you with a recall or a solution. Most of the problems are solved by owners and not the manufacturer because the manufacturer does not appear to care less about sending out product that plainly does not function as intended. I work in an electro-mechanical environment as a maintenance engineer so I do not wish to go home and do the same because of a manufacturers incompetance. If you think that this is complaining then you should read the hundreds of posts regarding Bachmanns literature! I too make suggestions and post observations regarding Bachmann products but I have seen nothing change.

It is a Chesapeake & Ohio® #1521 Spectrum with Tsunami stock Bachmann. I will have to remove the boiler to see the guts but that looks a bit complicated. I have no evidence of heat build up though.

I have a sound loco that was never as fast as other steam locos but it seems to be getting slower and slower. The chuff speed is fast so I assume that the received DCC command is OK but the loco runs about one third of the other locos. I have changed numerous CV's to no avail so I reset #8 to 8 and it's still about half the out the box speed. Anybody else seen this or have advice on CV's or could it be lubrication? I have lubed the rods but I have been reluctant to remove the boiler. It moves on startup increment 1 and has linear velocity to input but at 128 it is so slow. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
