Title: Engine length
Post by: drsam on March 10, 2014, 04:11:28 PM
I am interested in adding a turntable to my On30 layout and need the length of the longest engine and tender that the turntable needs to accommodate. I believe the longest engine with tender should be the 2-4-4-2, so I guess if a turntable would hold that size unit, I would be set. That's the dimension I need. Thanks for your help.

Hello,

The longest locomotive I have is the 4-6-0 Baldwin. She is longer than the 2-4-4-2 articulated.
The 4-6-0 is 13,500" long with tender. Wheelbase from the 1st to the last wheel is 11,500".
I think the 2-8-0 Consolidation is in the same range.
The 2-4-4-2 is 12.250" long with a wheelbase of 10.500".

Importand for the turntable size is the wheelbase.

For what its worth, the 4-6-0 fits (JUST!) onto a Peco On30 turntable. It has a longer wheelbase than the 2-6-6-2 which has a little more wriggle room.
